I say Thursday Feb 5th. It seems they push out the final release on the smaller updates fairly quickly after the beta is released.

Brad’s last blog post..WordPress Weekly Podcast Episode 40

It would be nice if there was a way to do this permanently. I'm happy to run the betas on a live site, but I usually can't be bothered as it requires updating so regularly. If I could it with the a permanent change to something I'd be happy to be a beta tester, but in the mean time I'll probably just stick to testing it on my local install.

@Ryan - I believe this works until you upgrade to a full public version, that being 2.7.1 final. You would then need to edit the file again if you want to take your blog off of the public release track and back onto the dev track.

Although it might be a pain to keep editing the file, it allows for more people to use the development versions of WordPress without the need to setup subversion.

I pick mignight February 3rd for the official release.

Thanks for the tip about 2.7.1 foo. Will that work more than once though? Will I be able to automatically upgrade to 2.7.2 beta when/if it is released or will I need to alter that file every time?
