5 Question Survey To Help Make WordPress.org Better

5 Question Survey To Help Make WordPress.org Better

By Jeffro on December 19, 2011

While browsing for specific plugins today on WordPress.org, I noticed a link at the top of the site that took me to a short survey where the answers will be used to improve the WordPress.org website. Please consider taking part in this survey as the WordPress.org website is one of the weakest links of the project. My opinion of the site and the islands around it is that it’s all one giant messy room that I have to wade through to find what I’m looking for. Hopefully, the responses in this survey give the team the necessary info to completely restructure the content on the website to make it easier to find. The last question in the survey asked me, Do you have any suggestions for how we can make the WordPress.org site better/more useful? My answer is blockquoted below.

Personally, I think the biggest weakness of the current website is the lack of organization of the data that it presents to the public. There is a lot of good information strewn about multiple pages but it takes too many clicks to get to. Also, some information needs be brought out from the depths of the site and made more public facing.

Placing the WordPress software aside, the WordPress.org website is one of the cornerstones of the project that I feel needs to be an awesome public face for the project.

Otto To Head The WordPress.org Redesign

Otto To Head The WordPress.org Redesign

By Jeffro on June 4, 2010

The WordPress.org redesign is about to get underway and the person who is in the hot seat to complete the work is Otto. For the past few weeks, we’ve been giving Otto some ideas as to what we would like to see done with the website. If you have not done so already, I highly encourage you to add your own feedback to the thread as it’s ongoing. Personally, I think the biggest weakness of the current website is the lack of organization of the data that it presents to the public. There is a lot of good information strewn about multiple pages but it takes too many clicks to get to. Also, some information needs be brought out from the depths of the site and made more public facing. From what I understand, Otto has reorganized his professional life for this opportunity so lets provide him the necessary support and hope all goes well. bbPress Website Gets A Fresh Coat Of Paint

bbPress Website Gets A Fresh Coat Of Paint

By Jeffro on May 4, 2010

Remember this image? It was grabbed from a couple of new design screenshots back in July of 2009 when Sam Bauers announced the site would be getting a face lift. It’s been awhile but the new design looks great. Asides from the missing bee in the header graphic, the design is pretty much the same with just a few minor tweaks. It’s good to see Sams work not put to waste.

The new design has sparked some life into the members of the forum and it’s also brought back a familiar face to the project, _ck_. I’m still not a fan of the huge Gravatars as I’d rather see them around the 75 Pixel mark instead of 132. Initial feedback and bug reporting appears to be centered in this thread. As Chip Bennett published in one of the recent threads:

At the very least, I take the bbpress.org refresh as a sign of new life, and in that sign, I choose to find hope of great things in the near future for bbPress itself.

Well said.

Gravatar.com Gets A New Look

Gravatar.com Gets A New Look

By Jeffro on August 20, 2009

gravatarlogoThanks to Viper007bond on Twitter, I was notified of a new redesign for Gravatar.com. Seems as though most sites under the Automattic umbrella are getting a refresh these days. The new design definitely provides more information than its counterpart along with links to developer resources on the front page. Also, there is a large screencast video produced by Michael Pick which explains what the service is all about.

Gravatar is not a complex site so this simple front page sums up the site quite well. What do you think?

Screenshots Of bbPress.org Redesign

By Jeffro on July 29, 2009

Thanks to Josh Leuze who tipped me off to this, it looks like bbPress.org is finally going to receive an overhaul with a brand new site design. The new design sticks with the same basic color scheme but the overall site gives a refreshed look and feel. My corny joke regarding the design is that there is a bug on the header.

I’m glad to see bbPress.org finally getting a much needed facelift. The only gripe I have about the design is that the forum gravatars are huge. I think having them a bit smaller would be the way to go. Please take a look at screenshot 1 and screenshot 2 and let me know what you think of the redesign in the comments.

BloggingPro And NathanRice Redesigned

BloggingPro And NathanRice Redesigned

By Jeffro on June 1, 2009

Two blogs which regularly feature WordPress content, BloggingPro.com and NathanRice.net have been redesigned. Nathans new design features a green and blue color scheme while using white as the background color for the content. The design strikes me as different than most other WordPress focused sites. I’m not sure if I like it or not but I think it will grow on me.

BloggingPro on the other hand looks 1,000 times better than it did previously. The new design was created by James McDonald, the same guy who created David’s personal site BrandingDavid.com. The new design is slick with a stylish logo and an eye pleasing color scheme.

Head on over and give each a thorough look over and then come back and report what you find.

WordCamp Central Redesigned

WordCamp Central Redesigned

By Jeffro on April 20, 2009

WordCamp Central which is the home base for all WordCamps has recently been redesigned. The site now features a large header which clearly explains a WordCamp is, eight upcoming WordCamp events and my favorite feature, the WordCamp events scheduled around the world presented on a Google map. Clicking on any of the blue pins generates a tooltip that provides date, location, website link, and the chance to generate directions to the event. Using Google Maps, you can easily figure out where hotels are near the event.

If you have time, stop by the redesigned site and check it out. While you’re there, find out if a WordCamp event is coming to an area near you.

Seven Days To Get Things Right

Seven Days To Get Things Right

By Jeffro on February 11, 2009

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that next week, I will be offline for the most part as I take this opportunity to Reformat my PC as well as my Notebook. It’s been a longtime coming and I need to get it done now rather than later.

Also, I need this week to refocus. January was a hell of a month for me and I’m so happy to see WPTavern succeeding right out of the gate. However, there are a number of things I must do that requires my full attention. It’s hard to provide that attention when I’m worrying about the next episode of WordPress Weekly or my pre-recorded segments that I do or the next episode of Perfcast etc.

You can read more information about my plans for next week here in the forum.
