In this special episode of WordPress Weekly, I sit down with Charles Stricklin the host of The WordPress Podcast and talked about his foray into WordPress, the difficulties involved with producing the show, podcasting in general, and near the end of the show Charles gives away a free gift which you’ll have to listen for. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview because Charles Stricklin is a large part of the inspiration that lead to me starting the WordPress Weekly podcast.

Longtime listeners of WordPress Weekly know that recently, we’ve started a new segment called WordPress trivia. Up until now, the segment has been used as a means of education and also to have a bit of fun. However, I’ve decided to turn this segment into a game by awarding points to the first three people who answer the question correctly within the comments of that shownotes page. The point system is as follows:
Be the first to get it right and earn – 3 points
Be the second to get it right and earn – 2 points
Be the third to get it right and earn – 1 point
There will be other methods of earning points as well such as through the WPTavern forum and by interacting with me on Twitter. The bonus point amount will be announced along with the question. Only the first person to get the correct answer will receive the bonus point amount.
The scorecard will be kept on the Trivia page along with the rules, how to participate and the prizes that will be up for grabs at the end of the year. Speaking of prizes, if you’re interested in sponsoring this shindig with a prize package, please get in touch with me. At the end of the year, the top point totals will be able to choose their prize until there are no prizes left.
I plan on starting the trivia game with the July 3rd edition of WordPress Weekly. If you have any comments or suggestions related to the game or ideas on how to make this thing rock, let me know.
David Peralty didn’t make it this week but a wide range of people did. It was a blast from the past episode as it mainly consisted of a roundtable discussion on a number of topics ranging from TalkPress to the WordPress HelpCenter to Plugin Style Sheets. This is an insanely long episode but when you get a group of WordPress faithful together in a tavern serving free drinks on a Friday evening, this is what you’re going to get. Enjoy.

Each week from now on, I’ll be featuring a new listener poll question on WPTavern.com The poll is located in the sidebar on the right hand side of the site.
Last weeks poll question was: Are You Excited For WordPress 2.8?
Out of a total of 22 votes, 11 people voted Meh, 10 of you voted Yes while 1 of you voted No
This Weeks Poll Question Is: Is Blogging dying because of Facebook, Twitter, etc?
Plugin Picks Of The Week:
Jeff – DiggBar Killer – DiggBar Killer adds a little snippet of Javascript to your WordPress website to remove any frames or iframes, such as the Digg Bar, which are surrounding it. DiggBar Killer also has a (100% optional) annoy feature. You can choose to annoy users coming from digg.com by showing an obnoxious message. The default “annoy” folder comes with some ugly animated GIFs and a MIDI file, but can be easily customized using plain-ole HTML & CSS (no PHP knowledge required).
The last WordCamp Chicago ticket is still up for grabs for whomever provides the correct answer first. Provide your trivia answers in the comments and I’ll email the person who gets it correct.
WordPress Trivia Question:
How long has Matt Mullenweg been a member of WordPress.org?
WordPress Meetup:
If you’re located in Ohio, more specifically the Youngstown, Akron, Cleveland areas, be sure to join me for the WordPress meetup that is taking place on April 23rd 2009 at 7PM EDT at a place called Office Space CoWorking located in Akron Ohio. The meetup is being conducted by myself along with Brian Layman of b5 media. The first meetup will be a meet and greet as well as a preview to the WordCamp Columbus event in May.
Announcements:
Matt Mullenweg is scheduled to be on WordPress Weekly on Friday April 24th, 2009
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up regarding the next few weeks of WordPress Weekly. This Friday won’t feature any guest interviews but instead, we’ll take time out to discuss the news of the past two weeks and catchup on other things that are happening within the community.
For episode 52 on April 24th, Matt Mullenweg will be our special guest. He was originally slated for March 20th but was unable to make it due to a meeting. On May 1st, we’ll be interviewing Daniel Scocco of DailyBlogTips.com. Daniel has worked with WordPress for a long time now so it will be nice to get him on to talk about his experiences with the software.
May 8th will feature no guests as we get back on track and possibly talk about WordPress 2.8 and whatever else is happening in the community. For Friday May 15th, it may be a shorter than average show as I will most likely be on the road headed towards Columbus for the WordCamp event scheduled to take place that weekend. We’ll be providing an overview of the event and will be talking about whatever else is happening in the WordPress-O-Sphere.
In this episode, we were supposed to interview Matt Mullenweg about all sorts of things but Matt didn’t show up. Not sure if he forgot or if other events got in the way but I have already contacted Maya to reschedule the interview. We stuck around for an hour and fifteen minutes with no Matt but we did manage to get a half hours worth of discussion among the people that called in. With the open mic, we discussed multi use widgets in WordPress 2.8, Themes, and Prologue 2.
I apologize to all of you who were really looking forward to the interview. Trust me, I was too. Next week however, we’ll have Vladimir Prelovac on to talk Plugin and Theme development.

WordPress Tavern Listener Poll:
Each week from now on, I’ll be featuring a new listener poll question on WPTavern.com The poll is located in the sidebar on the right hand side of the site.
Because of the way this weeks show progressed, I’ve decided to leave the poll question on the site for another seven days.
This weeks poll question was: Do you like the direction WordPress is heading?
Announcements:
Vkadimir Prelovac will be our special guest on March 27th to talk about plugin and theme development.
Episode 40 of WordPress Weekly discussed a wide range of topics from the release of WordPress MU 2.7 to the All In One SEO Plugin reaching one million downloads. Also sad to say that this was Keith Murray’s last episode as co-host. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Special Announcement:
Kym Huynh co-host of the WordPress centric podcast, WordCast was in a terrible car accident. Kym was in the middle of a three week vacation celebrating his recent graduation from law school when he ended up in a bad car accident. Unfortunately, Kym suffered quite a few broken bones and now has a metal arm. Dave Moyer of DaveMoyer.org, producer of show published an email he received from Kym earlier today that can be read on the DaveMoyer.org website. I personally wish Kym a fast and speedy recovery. Please visit DaveMoyer.org to find out how to send your get well wishes to Kym.
Each week from now on, I’ll be featuring a new listener poll question on WPTavern.com The poll is located in the sidebar on the right hand side of the site.
This weeks poll question was: Has the visual post editor ever made you angry?
Out of a total of 22 votes, 20 of you said yes while only 2 of you voted no.
Next Weeks Poll Question Is: Do you think configuration options need to be added to WordPress to configure Post Revisions?
Plugin Picks Of The Week: Jeff – Revision Control – Revision control gives users control over post/page revisions. With it, you can choose a blog-global setting which is found in SETTINGS – REVISIONS in the WordPress administration panel for pages/posts to enable/disable or limit the number of revisions which are saved per post/page. This setting can even be controlled on an individual level since the revision control shows up as a meta box in the WordPress Write Panel.
Keith – TweetSuite – TweetSuite is one of the most complete plugins available for Twitter-minded individuals. The tool allows for all the usual twitter features that we’ve come to expect (tweet my post, widget my tweets) but goes further: widget for favorite tweets, and most importantly TWEETBACKS. Becoming as important as trackbacks from other blogs are tweetbacks. When someone tweets your post with one of the major URL shortening services (tinyurl, is.gd etc) TweetSuite will find that tweet and add a tweetback to your post. Super cool. If you’re into twitter and have a blog, TweetSuite is a must-have.
Announcements: The next episode of WordPress Weekly will have a new co-host. Who will it be? Tune in to find out.
On the evening of Tuesday, January 27th, I had the pleasure to converse with Michael Pick, an employee of Automattic and also the guy behind the newly launched WordPress.TV. WordPress.TV is a new website which aggregates all sorts of WordPress content in video form. The site has already made a name for itself by showcasing many of the videos from recent WordCamps. Here is just a sampling of what we discussed during the show.
Here are some of the questions we covered on the show:
What is the purpose of WordPress.TV?
How did WordPress.TV reach fruition?
Will WordPress.TV feature content created by people other than Automattic?
What do you plan on doing with videos that seemingly disappear?
Can someone suggest a video that is produced with a language other than English?
If there were any plans to let the videos be downloadable or even a podcast?
Are WordPress.tv videos released under the GPL? Would love to use this stuff for company training videos
Near the end of the show, I let my curiosity get the best of me.
Plug For A Podcast: Plugins Podcast is a podcast which aims to cover one WordPress plugin a week with occasional interviews of plugin developers as well as heavy plugin users. Episodes range between 10-15 minutes and are in mp3 format. Angelo already has a podcast available on the pluginspodcast.com website where he discusses the CForms2 Custom Forms plugin. So if you’re a plugin junkie, this sounds like the show for you.
Announcements: This Friday will be Keith Murray’s last episode as co-host of the show. Please stop by for the going away party as we send Keith off to greener pastures.
Just the other day, I received an email from Angelo Mandato letting me know that he was producing a WordPress podcast called simply enough, PluginsPodcast. The show aims to review a plugin each week with occasional interviews with plugin developers, heavy plugin users and much more. Shows last between 10-15 minutes and are in MP3 format. So far, Angelo has produced episodes for his very own BluBrry Powerpress podcasting plugin, Peters custom anti spam and CForms2.
I took a listen to Angelos overview of the BlurBrry Powerpress plugin and enjoyed the high audio quality. Considering the short nature of these episodes, I believe many of you will be adding this new podcast to your Itunes subscriptions as I did because just about the entire WordPress community loves plugins.
Continuing with the theme of E-Commerce, this week I had the chance to interview Dan Milward who is the man in charge of the WP E-Commerce plugin. During the hour long conversation, we discussed the feature set of WP E-Commerce, e commerce in general, what its been like to operate a business in and around WordPress and much more. If you have used WP E-Commerce in the past or are just interested in hearing what Dan has to say regarding the plugin, definitely tune in to this episode.
Disclaimer: This interview was not purchased or is sponsored in any way.
Here are some of the questions we covered on the show:
What are the differences between the free version of the plugin and the gold cart solution?
In your opinion, why has WP E-commerce become synonymous with WordPress and E Commerce?
What are your thoughts on the GPL?
How has it been like for you and Instinct to run a business based on and around WordPress?
How well does WP-E-commerce work with WordPress MU?
Announcements: Next week will be Keith Murray’s last episode as co-host of the show. Please stop by for the going away party as we send Keith off to greener pastures.
It’s not often that we feature plugins or themes that you have to pay for but when the product is fully compliant with the GPL, things are gravy! In this special episode of WordPress Weekly, we talk e-commerce with Jonathan Davis who is the developer of the Shopp E-Commerce plugin for WordPress. Jonathan gives us the low down on what his plugin has to offer. What is also interesting is his business model. The plugin is fully compliant under the GPL but without purchasing the update Key, you won’t be able to upgrade the software. If you’re interested in learning about an e-commerce solution for WordPress, definitely take a listen to this episode.
Disclaimer: This interview was not purchased or is sponsored in any way.
Here are some of the questions we covered on the show:
Why did you create Shopp when WP-Ecommerce was already available?
Speaking of WP-Ecommerce, what does Shopp have to offer that the competition doesn’t?
Which payment options/gateways does Shopp support?
For a single site license, the plugin costs $55.00 What else does a user get when they purchase the plugin?
Does this plugin work with WordPress MU?
Announcements: On January 23rd, Dan Milward of the WP E-Commerce plugin will be our special guest to discuss E-Commerce from his point of view and tells us what his plugin is capable of.
