WordCamp Columbus, Ohio will be taking place this year between June 17th and June 19th. The event has a new organizer this time around in Angie Meeker who is an experienced WordPress designer and intends on making the event squarely focused on WordPress. Friday, June 17th, will be dedicated to the topic of Businesses and Beginners. The event is still looking for presenters that can talk to guests in a way that is simple and easy to understand, (Kim, you should do this :). June 18th will be dedicated to more in-depth topics concerning WordPress that developers and designers should find useful. In fact, some of the crew from Automattic will be in attendance as well as presenting on a few topics.
The last day of the event, June 19th will provide a genius bar where anyone that has any questions concerning WordPress can have them answered by knowledgeable WordPress users. There will also be a session dedicated to non-profits, specifically, Ohio based non-profit organizations, something Angie definetly has experience with herself.
The event is still looking for more speakers, sponsors, or volunteers to help. If you’re interested, please get in touch with Angiemeeker on Twitter or send her an email.
WordCamps will be few and far between for me this year but I’d be remiss if I didn’t find a way to make it to the one in my own back yard. The first WordCamp Columbus event went off pretty well for a first but I didn’t even bother attending the second one due to changes in the events structure. I’m hoping that Angie and the team can make WordCamp Columbus as respectable and fun as the others across the world. Please consider coming to the buckeye state to see me.

The second North East Ohio Meetup which took place on Thursday, May 28th was a success. We had a total of six attendees with three of those being new faces. Thanks to Jeff Lees efforts on Facebook, we at least got the word out about this particular event. Now that we have two of them under our belts, we can use the momentum to get more people to show up.
During this event, I gave a guided tour of the cool new toys that would be included in WordPress 2.8. I covered the new widget interface as well as the ability to install themes from the administration side of WordPress. For my first presentation, it wasn’t bad. I streamed the meetup which included my presentation on Ustream but thanks to a browser crash, I lost half of the show. Thankfully, I got the other half of the event on Ustream which you can view here. Warning it’s about 2 hours long heh.
Here are two photos of the event featuring our attendees!
The next meetup has already been scheduled. You can find information regarding the next event and also specify whether you’ll be able to join us or not by visiting the following link.

The first Ohio WordPress meetup went off last night as a success. While we did not have a huge crowd (only five people) the first event proved to be a nice base to build upon. Kim Parsell, Angelo Mendato, Jeff Lee, Brian Layman and myself were all in attendance. We discussed everything from caching to databases to WordPress MU, BuddyPress, and finally social media stuff like Twitter and Facebook. A couple things I noticed about the event.
First, when you’re surrounded by a group of people engaged in a discussion about WordPress or what have you, time flies. Those were the quickest three hours I think I’ve ever lived through. Secondly, participating on Twitter while those individuals are in the same room as you is funny, just because it is. Lastly, I feel as though in those three hours of discussion, I accomplished more than I would have if I participated in just a forum, Twitter, or comments on a blog post. It felt great to discuss a number of things in real time, face to face.
Again I want to thank all of those who were in attendance. During the event, Brian Layman recorded the meetup and he is going to try and put the recording on Ustream.TV. If he does, I’ll publish another update containing the video.
Next months WordPress Meetup will be on Thursday, May 28th at 7PM EDT. I’ll be giving a 15-25 minute presentation about what’s new in WordPress 2.8. To register for the event, head on over to Upcoming.Yahoo.com where I’ve added next months event to the schedule.

I’ve been in talks with Brian Layman for a long time with regards to doing a WordPress meetup in the northern Ohio area. Ever since I attended my first WordCamp in Dallas, TX I’ve been wanting to tap into that experience, what better way to do that than a WordPress Meetup? Here in Ohio, I like to tell people that the closest thing to a tech conference we ever have is a LAN Party. Thankfully, that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore as now there is a Podcamp Ohio along with WordCamp Columbus, two events covering topics I am very interested in.
The WordPress meetup will be taking place at 7PM EDT every fourth Thursday of the month at Office Space Coworking located in Akron, OH. This means the first event will be held on April 23rd, 2009. The building features WiFi internet, a cozy atmosphere and the equipment necessary to do presentations.
Please checkout their location page for information on where they are located and to figure out the directions on how to get their. This event is tailored in a location which is easily accessible between Cleveland, Akron/Canton, and Youngstown.
For the first meeting, there is no set agenda. I think if we all make it to the building on time, we’ll consider this a good start. Perhaps we’ll be able to talk about the release of WordPress 2.8 :)
