We Keep Knocking Them Down

By Jeffro on May 8, 2009

wpthappyhour

Welcome to the Friday Happy Hour. Each Friday, this post will provide a summary of what is going on within the WordPress Tavern Community. I haven’t done of these in awhile so lets see if I’m a bit rusty.

From The Forum:

The forum this week has been rather active thanks in large part to a thread I started which highlighted the fact that the guidelines for the WordPress Theme repository in as far as themes which had advertising for non-gpl themes were not being accepted were being enforced. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out how that thread went. If you want to chime in, you can view it here.

One Peeved Off Theme Maker

Ryan started a thread earlier this week asking if we had any sites hosted on WordPress.com. When you think about $15 year or so for domain mapping and $30 for no-ads, that’s a pretty sweet deal for most of what you would need to publish content on the web.

Why Use WordPress.com

How do you know when you’re a WordPress Addict? Read the posts on the following thread to find out if you meet the criteria.

You Know You Are A WP Addict When…

Last but not least, Conorp published a thread which linked to a great article by Ozh on how to find a job with Twitter. I find Twitter to be a great place to not only help people, but to receive help as well. By the way, look at this new WordPress domain that has a pretty parking page on it. WPHire.com

Accomplishments:

Oh boy, where do I begin. Since the site launched officially in March, the sites traffic has gone up, not down. RSS subscriptions continue to increase, the content keeps flowing in from not only myself, but from awesome members of the community. So instead of telling you what’s happening, I’ll try to let the images speak for themselves.

I have Woopra on for quite a long time each day checking to see who is on the site in real-time. Often, I’ll see you publish the comment in which I’ll be able to immediately respond. That is one of the beauties of Woopra. Aside from that though, I’ve discovered that the people who are finding this site are sticking around. They are coming back multiple times per week and they are diving deep into the site. For example, I see people all the time clicking on categories to view posts or one thing I see alot of people doing is clicking on related posts which shows up in the sidebar. All are great to see if you’re a webmaster.

I would like to take this opportunity to give special thanks to Dan Cole for writing his guest post which compared three of the most popular theme frameworks. That thing has performed amazingly well and continues to do so to this day.

While recently this site has received quite a bit of traffic from Stumble Upon, the majority of social traffic comes from Twitter which is no surprise to me. But I want to thank all of you who follow the WPTavern account on twitter and for ReTweeting me every now and then. It’s pretty awesome to see a tweet spread like wildfire.

Other News And Tidbits:

So far, I’ve only had three advertisers step up to the plate to purchase advertising on the site. On the side, a few people have donated as well. If you’re interested in being in front of a passionate audience of WordPress faithful, now is a great time to make the ad buy as rates are anywhere from $25.00 – $30.00 which is pretty darn affordable if you look at the rates across the board. If you’re interested in advertising on WPTavern, check out the Advertising page to get stated.

If you don’t want to advertise but would still like to show your support through a monetary donation, you can visit the Tavern Tip Jar where any donations which are $10.00 or more you get to display a URL of your choosing on that page. Granted, it has to be safe for work.

Also, at some point or another, I will install the TDO Mini Forms plugin so it will be easier to submit guests posts to the Tavern. I’m hoping to have that installed by the end of this weekend. I’m really interested in any guest posts regarding BuddyPress, bbPress, or WordPress MU.

Conclusion:

That’s going to wrap it up for this weeks edition of the Friday Happy Hour. It’s been a busy time around these parts and I’m enjoying every minute of it. Stick around because you’ll never know what will be published next. Remember the drinks, are always on the house.

Welcome to the WordPress Tavern Friday Happy Hour. Each Friday, this post will provide a summary of what is going on within the WordPress Tavern Community.

From The Forum:

Hosting Your Own Website – Community Member Conorp has been thinking about purchasing an old computer and setting it up as a webhosting server. There are pros and cons to this situation and the WPTavern community is filling in the gaps in order to steer Conorp in the right direction.

Displaying Categories In Themes – I brought up the issue earlier this week regarding why some themes are designed to show all of the categories for a blog. In most instances, a blogger has more categories than the space alloted for them so why bother? Check out the conversation that has ensued.

Premium Theme Business Models – With the Business section of the forum open for business, I took the opportunity to ask those in the forum to discuss ideas or business models that relate to premium themes and the GPL. We have a couple of great answers already, especially one by newcomer film_girl.
What Feature Do You Want In WordPress 2.8? – This thread is ongoing with a new entry made last night but a number of people have put their feature request in for 2.8. Have you?

Welcoming Party:

Other News And Tidbits:

During this past week, the WPTavern forum officially reached 100 registered users. Also, 6 Ways WordPress Might Die became the first post on WPTavern to be submitted to StumbleUpon. Thanks to Ian Stewart for that one.

WordPress Tavern will most likely have a new redesign which is lighter in color and won’t be of such high contrast at some point next week. This means that the forum will most likely undergo a color change as well. If you know of any dark, or not so light color schemes I should go with, send me your ideas.

By the end of next week, WPTavern should be all set and ready to go as far as advertising is concerned.

Conclusion:

That wraps up the Friday Happy Hour. Come back next week for yet another overview as to what is happening around the Tavern. Remember, the drinks are always on the house!

The Beginning Of The Friday Happy Hour

The Beginning Of The Friday Happy Hour

By Jeffro on January 30, 2009

Welcome to the first edition of the WordPress Tavern Friday Happy Hour. Each Friday, this post will provide a summary of what is going on within the WordPress Tavern Community.

From The Forum:

CForms 2 Removed From The Repository – Earlier this week, the popular CForms 2 Plugin was removed from the plugin repository due to it violating the WordPress Plugin Repository guidelines. The good news is, the plugin will continue to be developed under a fully compatible license but it won’t be hosted on the plugin repository.

Using WordPress As A Full Fledged CMS – I started a forum thread for everyone to post not only their ideas, but actual websites in use where WordPress is being used as a full blown content management site. I’m looking for a list of plugins and techniques in order to make this happen.

What I Would Like To Hear At A WordCamp – Jacob Santos describes what it is he would like to hear at a WordCamp. I also chimed in with what I’d like to hear as well. If you’re looking at starting a WordCamp event, check out this thread for topic information.

Why Do You Use WordPress – We all have a story as to why we use WordPress. This thread is a culmination of those. Please join in the conversation and share your story as to why you use WordPress.

Are You A Theme Hopper? – Kit asked this question in the forum and its become apparent that there are many theme hoppers. It’s sort of like a can of Pringles! Once you pop, you can’t stop!

Of course there is much more happening in the forum then what I mentioned in. Have a seat in the Tavern and join the conversation.

Welcoming Party:

I’d like to thank the following new members for joining WordPress Tavern forum. (These are their usernames)

James, Lorelle, greenshady, katemag, ptahdunbar, Brad, improvingtheweb, aaronwaggs, donnacha, jond, stefanvervoort, GaMerZ, robwhiteus, Techkitten, M.J., margaretroach, Many, Dan Schulz, andrew, PaulCunningham, kdmurray, Jacob Santos, Ted, JGR

Other News And Tidbits:

The first article on WordPress Tavern to be submitted to StumbleUpon is: Matt Mullenweg Talks To USA Today. Thanks to whomever submitted the article, that was awfully nice of you!

If you’re not following WordPress Tavern on Twitter, I highly encourage you to do so. You can follow the account by visiting the @WPTavern Twitter page and clicking the follow button. I use the Twitter account now only to notify followers of new updates, but also hot topics in the forum, WordPress tidbits I discover and I also tap into the wealth of knowledge that you folks have to discover new themes and plugins.

Over the course of this weekend or early next week, I’ll be installing something called OIO Publisher. This is a WordPress plugin that will help me manage the sale of display advertising here on the site. So don’t be shocked to see 125X125 images starting next week.

Later this evening, I will be addressing an issue that has popped up in the forum regarding advertising. The forum guidelines state:

3. Advertisements are not allowed. Generally speaking, posts made specifically for the promotion of a website, product or service are considered advertising or, at least, posts made that unnecessarily send people to a website that you are in some way affiliated with. It does not matter if it is a commercial website, a personal website, a non profit website, etc. I do authorize and/or sell advertisements on a case-by-case basis. If you are interested in utilizing this option, please contact me via THIS CONTACT PAGE.

I have decided that plugin or theme developers who start a new forum thread to talk about a plugin or theme they have recently developed/released is considered advertising. If someone else creates a thread other than the developer, it is not considered advertising. However, I will also be modifying the guidelines to point out that developers should not private message other members of the forum to post information regarding their plugin or theme developments. Doing so will put your account at risk of being suspended or worst case scenario, banned. If there is ever a demand from plugin/theme authors to have a place on the forum to advertise their developments, I may create a forum specifically for that purpose as part of a monetization strategy. But until then, please abide by these guidelines.

Starting next week, WordPress Weekly will be produced under the WPTavern site. Also, I will have a new co-host producing the show with me. Who that is, I’ll tell you next week. Also, the poll which is featured on the front page within the sidebar on the right hand side of the site will be changed each week in conjunction with the podcast. Consider it, a listener poll. I will announce the results and the following weeks question at some point during each episode of WordPress Weekly.

Last but not least, this site will be considered launched in public beta starting next week. So starting next week, I’d love it if you would do a small write up regarding the site and the community forum. If anyone encounters bugs or errors, please contact me via the Contact page accessible via the Contact link at the top of the blog.

Conclusion:

That wraps up the first installment of the Friday Happy Hour. Come back next week for yet another overview as to what is happening around the Tavern. Remember, the drinks are always on the house!
