wpMail.me Newsletter Wants Your Feedback

wpMail.me Newsletter Wants Your Feedback

By Jeffro on October 31, 2011

WPmail.me LogowpMail.me is a free newsletter curated by Cristian Antohe. Once a week, subscribers receive an email letting them know about the good stuff they might have missed during the week within the WordPress community. The newsletter covers WordPress news and articles, theme specific news, theme releases, Plugin news and last but not least, tutorials. I’ve been a subscribed member to the newsletter for a few months now and I take pride in knowing that most of the articles that make the weekly roundup I am familiar with. However, there always seem to be one or two good ones that I missed. This is the primary reason why wpMail.me is a good resource for me because it highlights news bits that I may have missed. So far, Christian has lived up to his promise by not sending anything else to my inbox except the newsletter issue.

So far, the newsletter is at 23 issues after 6 months. While I highly recommend subscribing to the newsletter, Christian currently has all issues available in the archive. If you use this newsletter, consider giving Christian some feedback either to him directly or through the comments on this post.

Improving The WordPress Support Forum

Improving The WordPress Support Forum

By Jeffro on June 4, 2010

Earlier today, I mentioned that Otto would be the man in charge working with the WordPress.org redesign project. Part of WordPress.org and perhaps the most active section of the website is the support forums. Everyone seems to have their own round of complaints regarding the forum but this time around, we now have an official outlet to voice our concerns of what we would like to see improved. Something which I’ve been harping on for a long time regarding the forum is the lack of email notifications for threads I have created or responded to. This will be addressed once the new version of bbPress is released and the support forums are upgraded.

With the support forum mainly being the first stop on the support train and so many people using WordPress these days, how to improve the forum experience for everyone now and into the future is a complex problem. Whatever can be automated should be automated because I think the human element to the forums is the most detrimental factor to them. Humans forget to mark posts as resolved, do not properly categorize their posts and publish them in the correct area, are needed on a full time basis to make sure things don’t get out of hand, etc.

There are a ton of great ideas already presented in the thread that I hope see the light of day such as some type of reputation system and more moderator tools to help keep the forum clean.

WordPress Idea Roundup

WordPress Idea Roundup

By Jeffro on September 7, 2009

ideasThe last I heard about the ideas section of WordPress was that Jane Wells was cleaning up the place to prepare it for an upgrade to bbPress 1.0.  Not sure how the progress is going but upon checking my feedreader this morning, I noticed some ideas starting to trickle in. Here is a small sampling.

Enhanced Author Widget – I wish there was a plugin to add am Author widget to the Widget section with options to display the avatar, to display a list of the posts (possibly with thumbnails generated from the articles next them), links to author’s pages on social networking sites, etc.

Offer Usage Stats To Plugin Authors – We can see how many downloads our plugins have, and from comments Matt M. has made we know there are stats on how many blogs a plugin is active on. It would be nice to make that available to the plugin author (maybe on the admin page where the SVN info, etc is). No personal information, just a simple “Installed/Active in ## sites”

I’ve talked with many plugin authors and plenty of them tell me this sort of information would be great to have. If you’re a plugin author and like this idea, I say go on over and voice your feedback, perhaps even include some information you’d like to see in the stats page.

Conditional Tags For ‘if pings’ or if trackbacks. - But now that we have the option to split comments and trackbacks up when displaying in our comments section, there is a small problem: there’s no conditional tag to say “if there’s trackbacks” or “if there’s pings” so we can keep the trackbacks list silent until there’s actually a trackback. The problem is that, with the new formulation, we end up with a non-XHTML-compliant ol or ul with no li in the middle.

While I don’t mind discussion of these ideas here, the discussion would be better placed on the actual ideas page. You can use your WordPress forum user account to login to the ideas forum.

Have You Enjoyed Your Stay At The Tavern So Far?

Have You Enjoyed Your Stay At The Tavern So Far?

By Jeffro on August 21, 2009

This week, I’m bringing the poll question a little closer to home in order to generate feedback regarding the site. The Tavern opened its doors back in March and since then, it’s been a blast witnessing the site growing in popularity and establishing a base of regular visitors. WPTavern site and forum is being mentioned at various WordCamps these days which is awesome. This site almost has 800 RSS readers according to the insanely accurate Google FeedBurner, the Alexa ranking for the domain is around 35,000 and the site has a PR of 5. More importantly though, we have about 100 active members on the forum, it’s active, and there is plenty of discussion revolving around WordPress in the comments of this blog, Twitter, and the forum.

As head of the Tavern, I’ve been working here, there, a little bit of everywhere. Unfortunately, I’ve quickly realized that I can’t do everything I’d want to within my own little community here because there is not enough time in the day. However, this week, I want to hear from you regarding what you’ve read on the site so far since March. Take a break from reading this site in your FeedReader and comment on this post. Let me know what you like, dislike, want to see more of, etc. I have my own goals in mind along with the direction I want to take the site but I’d love to compare my vision with yours.

Have You Enjoyed Your Stay At The Tavern So Far?

  • Yes (75%, 42 Votes)
  • I Practically Live Here (21%, 12 Votes)
  • No (4%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 56
