The History Of WordPress Default Themes

The History Of WordPress Default Themes

By Jeffro on February 8, 2012

WPLift has a cool post highlighting the different default themes that WordPress has had since its inception. According to the post, since WordPress was first created, the publishing platform has had a total of five default themes with Twenty Twelve being the sixth, slated to arrive with WordPress 3.4. It was a nice stroll down memory lane and a bit surprising that the amount of default themes was so low. However, it seemed like forever when Kubrick was the default theme for WordPress.

So the question is, how many of you remember using the first WordPress Default theme for your site?

Matt Mullenweg To Be In Charge Of The 2012 Default Theme

Matt Mullenweg To Be In Charge Of The 2012 Default Theme

By Jeffro on December 20, 2011

It was announced yesterday that Matt Mullenweg will be the one to oversee the development of Twenty Twelve, the new default theme for WordPress 3.4. Here is a list of things that the WordPress core team would like to see make it into Twenty Twelve:

  • single post/permalink view with post formats is needed
  • variable height header image
  • mobile version
  • default to static front page (will need a function in core to auto-choose)
  • editor styles the same as front end.
  • avoid clever things that aren’t super-useful (like ephemera widget)
  • start with 2011 as base for code (or 2010, which has gotten more updates and had more eyes on it)
  • no featured image in header
  • by default – no header image

If anything, it looks like Twenty Twelve will be simpler than Twenty Eleven. I wonder if the theme will be blue with rounded corners, just for old times sake?

Classic And Kubrick Have Left The Building

Classic And Kubrick Have Left The Building

By Jeffro on March 29, 2010

It’s officially happened. Classic and Kubrick have been removed from WordPress as per ticket 10654. We all know by now that WordPress 3.0 will ship with Twenty Ten which is the new default theme. Those who are upgrading WordPress either manually or automatically will receive Classic, WordPress Default and TwentyTen. Those who install WordPress 3.0 as a new install will only receive Twenty Ten. Those who use Subversion though will see both classic and kubrick be removed the next time they update.

Classics New Home – http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/classic
Defaults New Home – http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/default

The goal is to try and get everyone who is running either Classic or Default to upgrade their themes to use the ones located on the theme repository as 3.1 may be the version where these two themes disappear for good. Is it a sad day or a celebration?

Value, Default Themes, MaxBlogPress And Canonical Plugins

Value, Default Themes, MaxBlogPress And Canonical Plugins

By Jeffro on January 10, 2010

Better late than never. Last week, the forum was filled with great conversations some of which will transfer into this week. We’re up to 540 registered users as we keep humming along. Here are just a few of the conversations taking place on the forum.

MaxBlogPress Plugins Removed From WP Repository – All of the MaxBlogPress plugins were removed because of complaints received by users. If you’re an internet marketer with plugin development knowledge, you might want to read this thread to figure out NOT to market. The good news is Chip Bennett has forked a few of the plugins and even created on that bypasses the opt-in email activation.

Matter Of Value – This thread starts off with me linking to a great post by Jay regarding the matter of value. Ever hear the phrase, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder? The same can be said for value. At least one person is not happy with the pay structure of the All In One SEO Pro version of the plugin. Read on to find out why.

Shackling a free market: WordPress canonical plugins – While the benefits of canonical or core plugins have been preached, what are some of the negatives that could be introduced? How about the idea that with the socialization of plugins, other developers of plugins in that field may suffer reduced innovation and motivation. Definitely some food for thought.

WP to change default theme annually – It’s been so long since Kubrick was bundled with WordPress. This year, we’ll see a new default theme included with WordPress 3.0 but Ryan Hellyer quotes a piece from the post highlighting the history of Kubrick that changing the default theme in WordPress will be a once a year thing to keep things fresh.

Canonical Plugins – When the poll was created to figure out what to name canonical plugins, there was some good discussions within this thread on what to call them. With the poll over and the results in, it looks like going forward that the new term for these plugins will be ‘core plugins‘.

If you’re not a registered user of the Tavern forum, I highly suggest getting yourself an account and please, answer the anti-spam question or I’ll delete your registration.
