PressNomics – Conference Specifically For Commercial WordPress Entities

PressNomics – Conference Specifically For Commercial WordPress Entities

By Jeffro on May 4, 2012

Pressnomics LogoIn what I believe is the first of it’s kind, PressNomics aims to bring together the various commercial entities that are successfully making a living around WordPress. The conference is being held in Chandler, Arizona which by the way, is a great name for a city between November 8th and 10th, 2012. There is room for around 150-200 attendees with ticket prices starting at $150.00. The tickets go on sale starting in June but most of the attendees will be personally invited. While Joshua and Sally Strebel are among those organizing the conference, this is not a Page.ly focused event. Among the list of confirmed speakers thus far include Mark Jaquith and Mikkel Svane, the CEO of ZenDesk.

When I asked Josh why he’s helping to put on this event, here was his response:

I had this idea for a while and finally decided to execute on it after discussing it with others. People seem to agree that having a meet up of sorts to discuss best practices and learn from each others experiences and stories would be helpful. The programming is for the benefit of the businesses that drive the WordPress economy, not so much the end user of WordPress. + it is a good excuse to get together with our peers.

Sounds like a great idea to me. There is already a lot of collaboration between commercial WordPress entities in the community but I think this will do a lot of businesses some good to get together in person, especially to share success and failure stories. One thing worth noting is that this is definitely not a WordCamp event as illustrated via their disclaimer.

This is not a WordCamp, and it has not been endorsed by or is affiliated with the WordPress Foundation. WordPress is a trademark of the WordPress Foundation, respect.

While organizing an event like this is not easy, it has to be considerably easier to be able to put on a conference about a specific aspect of WordPress with 0 restrictions.

Open Source Scotland Cancelled

By Jeffro on January 20, 2012

The conference that was supposed to bring together heavyweights within the open source world to Scotland has been cancelled. KevinJohn Gallagher listed a number of reasons as to the cancellation of the conference with one of them being the unfortunate circumstance of a number of people requesting refunds for their tickets after Kevin published an article explaining why his company would no longer be using WordPress. He promises to refund everyone’s tickets in full but you’ll have to give him some time as it involves multiple parties.    ∞

WordUp – A Fork Of WordCamp

WordUp – A Fork Of WordCamp

By Jeffro on September 17, 2011

If you’re anywhere near the Edinburgh area around October 22nd, make a pit stop to an event they are calling WordUp Edinburgh. According to the event website, this un-conference will mimic the WordCamp model in that there will be presentations with attendance being free. However, there are only going to be 50 spots available for this one day event. Congrats to those who purchased their tickets as all available spots have been sold. From taking a look at the attendee list, I’m happy to see that co-creator of WordPress, Mike Little, will be there along with one of my favorite commenters, Donnacha of WordSkill.com.

With regards to the event name, what do you think of WordUp? Could this become the defacto name for independent WordCamp events not wanting to have to deal with all of the guidelines that come with using the trademarked term, WordCamp? At least with WordCamps, we generally have an idea as to what to expect out of the event thanks to longevity of the term being used as well as a tighter grip being placed on events using the name. So I leave you with this poll question.

Do You Think The Term WordUp Is A Good Alternative To WordCamp?

  • Yes (63%, 60 Votes)
  • Nothing But Confusion (25%, 24 Votes)
  • No (12%, 12 Votes)

Total Voters: 96

Boston Was A Good Time

Boston Was A Good Time

By Jeffro on January 26, 2010

As most of you know, I spent last weekend in Boston, MA for WordCamp. The flight in was a bit bumpy but nothing to cause worry. Special thanks to Michael Torbert who paid for the cab ride from the airport to the Marriott which by the way, was a steal at $99.00 a night. The hotel was great with comfy beds and Brian Gardner s favorite establishment on the ground floor, Starbucks.

As for the event itself, it was rock solid. The Microsoft NERD center was a pretty cool establishment to host a WordCamp despite the colorful furniture. I started the day off in the applied track by moderating a panel discussion around the topic of monetization in a free world. I truly believe the session could have been better but it only started getting interesting once we were 20 minutes or so into the panel. I think if I were to have more time, such as an hour or more, this would have been an excellent panel. I also felt that because I know more than the average WordPress end-user, some of the questions I was asking required in-depth knowledge of other aspects of the WordPress community. I may get the panelists together again on a future episode of WordPress weekly to give the topic justice. The only feedback I received from the panel was a tweet from someone who said they couldn’t use anything that was discussed in the panel for their own business. This leads me to believe that the word monetization must have thrown some people off as if we were going to talk about making money with WordPress powered sites.

After my session was over, I hung out around the building talking to various members of the WordPress community. I only attended two sessions during the day. One by Jonathan Davis talking about the Shopp plugin with Shayne Sanderson discussing WP E Commerce, and Brad Williams WordPress security presentation. Both were informing but what I’ve come to find out is that after you attend a few WordCamps, the sessions or information becomes repetitive which makes the un-conference room much more important for me. Although it took me all day to find the un-conference room because it was hiding behind two big silver doors that resembled a vault, I was glad to get an up-close presentation by Michael Koenig of IntenseDebate.com. I like what I saw. If there was no way for me to have the commenting system I now have, I’d most likely be using something like IntenseDebate but for now, the system I have works. I was also able to admit to Michael’s face my resentment towards using a third-party commenting system, despite the synchronization that takes place ensuring no comments are lost. I tried to explain what was holding me back but it just seems like a third-party inserted into the commenting phase for me is just like an invisible wall to get over. I also told Michael how upset I was that RoboForm does not work with the fields inside of IntenseDebate. I think I can fix this problem myself but filling in those fields all the time sure was a pain.

Of course, the biggest news to come out of Boston was the launch of the WordPress Foundation and WordCamp New York donating almost $30,000.00 to seed the foundation. I’m looking forward to see how the foundation spends this money as all eyes will be watching.

On Friday evening, I and a group of other WordPress community members had dinner at a place called Legal Seafoods. Great place that accommodated about 20 of us just before the dinner hour. The food and service was awesome.

Overall, I considered the event a success. Plenty of schwag to go around, great food during lunch, and surrounded by awesome people. One of the touching moments during the entire event was during the opening remarks on Saturday morning where Brian Gardner and the StudioPress team launched a site called WPCares.com. The proceeds go to the Red Cross and will be used to fund relief efforts in Haiti. WPTavern donated $25.00.

One other thing that I was reminded of during WordCamp Boston is that the WordPress community is filled with good people. You may not agree with their business model, you may see someone as a competitor, you may think they are a jerk, but deep down, the people I interacted with last weekend were all good-hearted people who were willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. I’m trying not to poop any rainbows, but it was a good feeling to be surrounded by people like that.

As of now, I plan on attending WordCamp Raleigh, North Carolina, WordCamp Columbus, OH and WordCamp Chicago, IL. Any WordCamps after June are up in the air. Unfortunately, I won’t be attending San Francisco yet again but I am making plans to turn next years San Fran event into a week-long vacation. This will probably be the only opportunity in my life time to check out the Redwood National Forest, a lifelong goal of mine. Anyone else in the crowd planning on attending the three I mentioned?

Check out my photos from the trip.

WordCamp Chicago Next Weekend

WordCamp Chicago Next Weekend

By Jeffro on May 27, 2009

wordcampchicagoNext weekend, I’ll be on my way to Chicago, Illinois for WordCamp Chicago. I’ve been psyched up for this event ever since it was announced mostly due to the people organizing it as well as the awesome list of speakers that will be doing presentations. People such as Liz Strauss, Jeremy Wright, and Micah Baldwin from Lijit. Of course, I’m also pleased to be able to get the chance to meet Matt again face to face.

For this event, I don’t plan on doing streaming video but I will be in chatbox in the Tavern Forum talking about what I’m seeing and hearing. I’ll also be tweeting the event. It looks like all the presentations will be in one room so the influx of tweets should be pretty high if someone says something interesting.

By the way, on this weeks episode of WordPress Weekly, I’ll have both Brian Gardner and Lisa Sabin Wilson on the show to give us a preview of the event.

I have yet to purchase my hotel room for the event. I’m going to try and get one as close as possible to the UBS Building which is where the conference is being held, that way I can walk to the event and not worry about driving. I’m terrified of driving through downtown metro areas so could anyone give me some hints on how to keep my sanity/composure?
