bbPress 2.0 Stable Now Available

I’d love to hear more about the potential mysql problems with large tables like this and any possible solutions if anyone has any.

I’ve used the converter in order to switch my vbulletin forums over to bbpress and so far so good. It was not a large forum ’30k members 300k posts’, but it was large enough to get a general idea about whether or not it would work.

I am NOT a server admin so I can’t talk ‘techy’ about how my site is doing other than to say that I do not notice any difference in speed between the vb install and my bbpress install.

I am NOT yet using any type of caching scripts and I have not optimized mysql in any way. This is a straight out of the box Debian install.

The only metrics I do know is that my server load is the same, and I have no problem handling hundreds of concurrent users. Of course this is a dedicated colo server with plenty of resources. *We have not yet gone live with the bbpress forums install, still testing everything and writing custom theme/plugins*

I do have friends that run forums with posts numbering in the millions. I do not believe they have yet tried a conversion, nor do I think they will.

The converter plugin should be available early next week for anyone that wants to try it out. *STRONGLY SUGGEST BACKING UP YOUR DB* I have already sent Jeffro a twitter link to the download.

**A 2nd/3rd/4th set of eyes on the plugin code would be greatly appreciated!

VideoPress Undergoes Major Update

Just checked the videopress download sourcecode and so far it has not been updated. Guessing these new features are not going to be made available to users running self hosted videopress, at least not at the moment. The code offered to us for download has not been updated in 10 months now.

One thing I have never understood about videopress is why they don’t offer live broadcasting. I am already running my own flashcomm cluster for live broadcasting. It would be really great to somehow tie that into videopress someday as the UI would be integrated so much better than what I have now.

How VideoPress Bit Me

I actually tried to use videopress, but when I found out that they do not support rtmp, rtmpe, it was a no starter from the get go. As all of my video’s are between 1-2hrs long, there is no way I would ever go back to progressive download. Simply switching to rtmp cut my server bw bills by over 60%. Rtmp only sends what the customer requests, and allows ff/rw instantly without having to wait for the load.

With systems like wowza being so incredibly inexpensive now, I was actually shocked that videopress didn’t utilize it. It’s much more efficient both on cpu cycles and bw usage.

I can say that their system is so integrated, that if they ever did offer rtmp/rtmpe at reasonable rates, I’d jump over there in a second.

It’s really sad that the videopress ‘open’ framework pretty much died on the vine. I have not seen an update to it in over a year now.

Cory Miller Talks Business Via WordCamp Raleigh

After reading through builder, it became quickly apparent to me just how great a coder Corey is. I would have no problem trusting my ‘mobile’ site in the hands of pluginbuddy.

Thanks for the heads up on this plugin. Had no idea it was even being built. Going to check it out now.

Use The Media Library Or Hand Code?

I pretty much only use the media library for adding images to posts. I completely gave up on using it for video.

I use flash comm rtmp servers for my video’s, and the media manager has no idea how to deal with rtmp streams. Frankly it kind of sucks. It would be so nice to see a version of the media gallery where I could input the rtmp streamer settings, as for the most part none of that ever changes.

I have my own custom panel that allows me to easily create advertising campaigns, so adding in pre/post roll commercials is very easy. It even creates the thumbnails for me for the video player itself.

I even tried the videopress plugin, but after having a number of real dev’s look at it, it was finally decided that there is no way to get that plugin to work with rtmp streams.

Then there is the problem of not having folders within the media gallery for sorting images. I can’t even imagine using the media gallery for my photo sites, as most of them contain between 300k-2mill photo’s… that would suck bigtime in wordpress with no sorting.

It’s almost like the entire media library concept is nothing but an afterthought with wordpress. Bottom line for me.. it sucks

Woo To Power Menu Management In WP 3.0

This is a fantastic move. After using their nav system already I am 100% sold on having it a core function, or at least being able to call the function in my themes. Hands down the best nav system that I have come across… congrats guys!

Why I Use VBulletin

I think it was a great decision to go with vbulletin as your forum of choice here. I have used vb for years now and swear by it. I have just found that no-one is even close to the power of vbulletin and I have tried them all as far as I know.

As with many other people I was furious when they sold vb and went a completely different direction. I’ve played with 4.0 and it’s a load of crap thrown together pretending to be a forum when compared to the 3 series. I’m not even going to get into how angry i was when they changed the upgrade policy as well. Considering I probably own as many copies of vb as anyone online, this hit me hard. My bottom line is that I probably will never change to 4.0.

Now if bbpress would just get a clue and throw some development into their product, then I would consider switching. But for the moment, bbpress is a complete joke when put side by side with vb and it’s feature set. I can only hope they continue development of bbpress, esp as buddypress continues to grow.

PremiumThemes.net Club Membership Giveaway

There are already plenty of wp sites with the ‘top 20 xxx’ lists available, and frankly at least to me they get old.

What is really hard to find is sites that focus on the codebase itself. It could be something simple like little code snippets that do certain things, or preferably more advanced topics. I know for me at least, I would love to see articles that pick a particular topic within wordpress, like adding taxonomies, (Justin’s movie database article is great at this). Where everyone that I have found falls short, is they do a basic article, and never expand on it. I for one would really love to see some very advanced cms concept code articles.

CodePoet.com – New Home For WordPress Consultants

Thanks for the heads-up on the new site. I just went and visited it.

What I don’t understand is why the initial sorting of coders is region specific instead of skills specific. Meaning, at least for me, I don’t care where the coder is based out of. I just want to find a person who has the abilities that I need for my project at a price point I can afford. Oh and references from other ‘trusted’ coders makes a huge difference.

I say this because even though I am based in the U.S. to date I have hired only international coders as they were the best for the given job. I would dig through the forums for the object that I was working on and needing help with and look for the ‘person with the answers’. then I would simply look at their body of work, and if it looked like they had the ability I would make contact with them to hire them.

Anyhow, the new site is a good start, I just hope to see it expanded into specific abilities, examples of work done, referrals, etc.. almost like a resume but searchable.

GravityForms 1.1 Released

@Carl – Thanks for the explanation, I’ve just seen some really weird stuff out there is all. You are correct, I have no problem with callbacks for upgrades, and I do not remove that functionality from wp as it’s convenient to know when an upgrade is available without having to visit the plugin site each day.

What I was describing was a theme I purchased that every time the admin page was loaded a callback was made to the theme’s providers server, which went up n down all the time, resulting in the inability to edit the admin…. yeah some crazy stuff goes on out there.

Getting back to gravityforms:
One thing that is not clear to me is this…. Do the forms only work for the enduser or am I able to create forms for data input on the backend… think flutter/magic-fields/pods

I personally don’t really have a use for enduser forms at the moment, but do have the need to create custom forms for my ‘site admins’ to use in order to create custom post content.. once again think flutter/magic-fields/pods

Example:
A site admin wants to create a ‘sermon’ post, so he needs input boxes for series/date/embed code/description/file uploads/etc
On the backend, each of those boxes uses a shortcode that I apply to a custom category template…

hope that makes sense…
(flutter/magic-fields/pods all seem to have their own issues in a wpmu environment, so I’m still hunting for the perfect solution)

sidenote so I don’t sound like an idiot: I meant xss not css injection in earlier post LOL, typing to fast

btw… love the edit comment plugin

Well I was interested up until the point I heard about the license key and checking back to the server…..I had a theme that tried to do that which really ticked me off. I’m just one of those ‘weird’ guys who refuses to run any script with encrypted code or callbacks built in.

When I run into that, the first order of business is always to decrypt everything, remove all callbacks and then determine if the code is solid enough for my use. –Lesson was learned from the theme that was encrypted when I purchased it. The dev’s were positive that it was secure, and only after ‘opening’ the code up did I find tons of css injection points and function vunerabilities. (No it was not a warez theme, but one I purchased directly).

I’m not saying that your code is bad, haven’t purchased it, I’m just making a point against your ‘model’ is all. It does nothing for protecting your plugin, it just causes me extra headaches by having to spend the time to decrypt and null it is all…

@Donnacha – Couldn’t agree more with you. I have my own flash media server cluster, and feel so left out when it comes to using it with wordpress. I even looked through the ‘new’ video framework plugin and was really dismayed to see that it has no ability to hook to rtmp servers for storage and output. (Really blew me away that even wp does not do true streaming or offer recording ability, so I guess it’s gonna be a very long wait)

@Jeffro – Obviously there are a lot of ‘trusted’ people recommending gravityforms now, so I guess it’s time I head on over and see what all the fuss is about. – I do remember looking at it awhile back, but you are right the demo left me feeling like it was no big deal and not worth spending anything on it. Obviously it does much more than what they are showing.

Who’s Responsible For Keeping Your WordPress Site Up To Date?

I voted for the end-user simply because it’s free software. If it were a commercial product like sawmill, parallels, etc.. then I would expect consistent updates both for security and functionality.

I believe that ultimately it comes down to the end-user taking the responsibility for reading through and understanding the software that they install on their server, not just the front-end but the engine behind it.

I am very greatfull though that automatic does keep updating everything though. Without them behind the software, I would not have even considered wp in the first place and would have gone the commercial route.
