BuddyPress Takes bbPress Integration Up A Notch

@John James Jacoby

Wow, forums for individual blogs and events too, that makes so much sense, this is going to blow vBulletin out of the water.

As I understand it, this improvement has not yet been fully tested and appears only in the bleeding edge version of BuddyPress. You should not use the bleeding edge version for production sites. According to the roadmap, the improvement will appear in 1.1 release of the stable version, due August 27th.

It is, certainly, a very welcome improvement – one of the best features of BuddyPress is the way in which it gives each group it’s own forum, a very smart way to interweave the forum activity with the profiles and other social activities of the group members. This is so much smarter than having one monolithic forum section, with the forums all in one place, creating an artificial divide between the forums and the social elements of your site.

As such, bbPress is pretty much an essential part of BuddyPress but, until now, installing bbPress and then integrating it has been problematic, far more difficult than the MU side of things. I was lucky enough to find a good set of instructions and got my own site up and running fairly quickly, but I didn’t bookmark the instructions and, when a friend tried setting up a BuddyPress site this week, he wasted several hours before giving up in frustration.

Anyone who encounters problems should consider waiting just a month for BuddyPress 1.1 but, if you have a use for it now, you might be as well try the current 1.0.3 version, you might encounter no problems, just search the BuddyPress.org developers forum for good instructions.

Brian Gardner On WordPress Weekly

Looks as if my question, above, is already redundant, Brian has already thrown himself full-force into BuddyPress:

A Heavyweight Bout with BuddyPress

You should definitely, though, get him to talk about BuddyPress generally.

Here’s a question that I think many people would be interested in hearing Brian answer:

“A couple of days ago, Andy Peatling announced in the BuddyPress forums that he will definitely be releasing a version of BuddyPress for regular WordPress i.e. a version that does not need a complicated WPMU installation. Removing that barrier is clearly going to hugely increase the adoption of BuddyPress by regular bloggers; does Brian have any plans to release a StudioPress theme for BuddyPress to capitalize on that?”

BuddyPress is shaping up to be a game-changer but I think we’d all like to see Brian apply his special touch to it’s visual side.

gMaps – Cool WPMU Theme

I’m afraid I’m an entirely different Donnacha – we’re both Irish and our names are almost the same but the WPMU lead spells his incorrectly: “Donncha” :)

It’s a confusion that has come up a few times and I do my best to correct it but, still, I always feel a little bit guilty. I’ve talked to Donncha about it and he thinks it’s funny.

Anyway, I’m quite involved in the WordPress community and this problem is bound to crop up again, so, just for the recored, the best way to distinguish me from Automattic Donncha, apart from the different spelling of our names, is that I always post as “donnacha | WordSkill” (WordSkill.com will be my main blog once it launches).

Also, to further minimize confusion, I made my gravatar as unique as possible, using a ridiculous photo of me dancing on a mountain after a country wedding. That should make it pretty easy to tell us apart, unless Donncha starts dancing on mountains too – and he won’t, he’s too busy playing video games.

Back on topic, I’m delighted that you’ll be releasing a WP version and don’t stress too much about the premature spotlight, just use it as a good reason to focus and finish your project at a sensible pace, taking the time to do it right and, more importantly, to enjoy it – as long as your don’t do a StayPress and clearly lose interest in your project, your audience will still be waiting for you in a few months.

Why not do this as a regular WP premium theme?

As far as I can see, your theme’s unique feature is that posts are attached to specific locations on the map. I understand that your original client runs a blog network based upon WPMU, but this functionality has no inherently MU-specific requirements.

By requiring WPMU, you are massively cutting down your potential market. Far more people are willing to install regular WP than WPMU, why insist on WPMU when your customers might not want or need to run a blog network?

A quick rewrite for WP compatibility would result in far more sales.

Core Plugins? Never Gonna Happen!

I couldn’t agree more on Hello Dolly – it adds no useful functionality and, for the vast majority of users, simply adds another step to the installation: having to remove it.

It’s not about its size (actually 4kb on the disk) but the unnecessary cluttering of the plugin page. If developers need “an example file on how to develop plugins”, I’d suggest they download it along with the necessary documentation.

I appreciate a light-hearted gag as much as anyone, but this joke isn’t funny anymore.
