Good Or Bad? Infinite Scrolling

@Eric Mann – This is exactly what AutoMATTic is doing at wordpress.com. Infinite scrolling is being implemented site wide and there is no opt out except for cases where themes have footer widgets (apparently they have not found out how to retain those and have infinite scrolling). There will be a handful of the themes that will not get infinite scrolling because it makes no sense, but those will be rare. What’s more, you can’t even choose how many posts you want to show or per load. It is 7 and if you don’t like that you are SOL.

One size does not fit all, and especially on image heavy sites where users might put multiple large sized images in each post, they typically will limit the number of posts per page to 2 or 3. Can’t do that anymore. There are also those that want to have more control over how their stuff is presented and infinite scrolling simply doesn’t work for them. AutoMATTic refers to them as “edge cases” and the law seems to be that you can then just ignore them.

Determining Which Plugins Are Slowing Your Site Down

Simple lightbox is a hog as well. I’m now going through all my client sites and will find alternatives were needed.

A Theme With 70 Different Widget Spots

Yeah, but you just know that there are people out there who are trying to use it. I like having a good variety of locations for modules/widgets but this is, well…

WordPress And Its Cloudy Future

I agree, it has to continue to move toward CMS, but I hope they do this thoughtfully and with due consideration and keep it very simple to use so that those without a good number of “geek” genes can still build themselves a simple site and/or blog. And for those people, as they need more capability they can move into it.

Matt M (if you happen to drop by): Please though, NEVER let it become as convoluted and complex as Drupal.

WordPress.org Should Scare You

The OP in that thread is right. I’ve been managing a Drupal site for just over a year, and trying to find information is always a 3 or 4 hour process it seems, and even then it is unlikely you will find everything you need. Drupal has incredible capabilities and is extremely flexible, but everything seems to take so much effort.

WordCamp New Zealand This August

Gudday Ryan. I’m from Wellington. Have been using WordPress for years. It just keeps getting better, and better, and better. I started out with Typepad and Squarespace and then discovered WordPress. Simply superb. See you August. R.
