WPTavern in 2010

I have to admit, I am a WPTavern-a-holic. This is one of the first WP sites I check during my daily routine.

WHEN WILL WPTAVERN T-SHIRT BE AVAILABLE?

Episode 83 Rescheduled

Andrea: I am the type of person who asks the questions no one wants to ask. I also think people are freaking out over the WP API thing knowing the urls and I am willing to give those people some of my tinfoil so they can protect their brains from Big Brother. :D

By the way: Every Tuesday Evening at 8PM EST <— from WP Weekly info page, January 5th. is a Monday.

You know, I listened to WP Weekly both on TS live and on here downloading the episodes I missed but I have never called. I will be asking when will WPTavern t-shirts and Andrea underscore r t-shirts will be available.

Do You Think WordPress Is Secure?

@donnacha

Wouldn’t it be better for WordPress to keep a mailing list for announcements when a new WordPress version comes? also not just a major 2.x version but all versions even if 2.8.4.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.12 came.

2.8.4 Is Out, Better Upgrade

There is such thing as too many upgrades at one point. I rather have less frequent upgrades that are very well tested than having an upgrade everytime I change my boxers.

There are many tech directors like me who admin MANY websites. I admin a lot of sites for non-profit/community groups, and I have to be very careful on changes (upgrade = change).

These many upgrades can also be turned to a lack of checking out vulnerabilities…like when 2.8.0 came out, then when .1/2/3/4 comes out, then all these “small” fixes get added, why were they not checked over when the main big brother (2.8.0) came out? I am sure Matt and others check for bugs but they missed at least 4 (I will give them the benefit of thinking that .1-.4 each fixed ONE bug). If I see 2.8.5 come out anytime between now and Sep 1 (my birthday) then I will be loosing some trust on the safety/security checks on WordPress.

Virtual WordCamp Virtually Disappears

Both VirtualWordCamp and VirtualWordWeek do not load for me.

I wonder how many people paid for VWC/VWW…

I knew it wouldn’t take place in some level (VWC), WordCamps always have issues with interwebz connections anyways.

WordPress 2.8.2 Released

I think there is such thing as too many upgrades coming too quickly, and there is such a thing as not enough updates in a period of time…

Everytime there is an upgrade even if it’s a x.x.x.x.x.y upgrade then it worries me, it makes me think that the testers/automattic were lazy and didn’t looked at the code truly.

Ad Block Plus Not Needed Here

I use NOscript 1.9.5

It blocks all scripts, I can even find out if a site is using Google Analytics or Woopra.

I have you white listed.

I resetted the list of sites I allow.

One thing about NOscript 1.9.5 is that I whitelisted GA and Woopra on this site, it is whitelisted for all sites using GA and Woopra (GA and Woopra, not those sites, that’s seperate). Basically I don’t have to say yes every time GA or Woopra is used in every site, I trust them here so I should trust them everywhere.

I seen sites with over 20 scripts. waaaaaaay too many ads.

If 19 out of 20 items in a website is ads (20th. being the content of whatever post) then that says a lot about a site.

I am just curious about appropriate ads (I have only clicked on webdev studios on this site), I do click an ad or two from time to time if I find it interesting or I need something from it.

There has to be a balance of ads and content.

The First Virtual WordCamp

Virtual conferences are good if let’s say it takes place in Australia, and I live in Canada (I will not travel down there for just a day conference or even two or three). It could be the other way around.

I have met many members of the WordPress Community through the two WordCamps I have attended (WCT08 and WCT09). I even had lunch with a few of them at WCT09.

What about the drunken opening party or after party? Virtual beer gives me gas.

There are so many countries around the world that are still using dial-up or crappy highspeed.
You need a strong internet connection for good stream viewing.

I tend to stay a few extra days when I go outside Toronto for conferences since I like to travel and explore the cities the conferences are in. If I go to WCSF, I am sure Matt or any of the local attendees would have real suggestions over usual touristy places to visit.

Overall my preference is to go to a WordCamp conference (or any type) and interact in person.

Why not merge both? I attended PodCamp Toronto last year…All (or at least most as far as I was aware) their sessions were streamed. Wether you have 1 tracks or 3 tracks…stream them.
So people who can’t make it due to distance…can actually e-attend. Mix both.

I want to meet up with the different…admins/webmasters/WordPRessers of the different WordPress sites/forums/podcasts I read/listen to. WPtarven being my favourite site :)

One last thing: Virtual WordCamps don’t give you a WordCamp T-shirt.

» Posted By Miroslav Glavic On June 29, 2009 @ 3:16 PM

There is more of a chance of you giving me wptaver.com (selling for free) than me attending this.

$69.95 ok sure, not!

WordCamps always suffer with their WI-FI.

For that much if the connection lags even for ONE second I would want my money back.

WordPress 2.8.1 Beta By End Of The Week

Dude, 2.8.1 coming out so soon? I have to upgrade over 30 installations……….aaaaaaaargh.

so why were the bug fixes on 2.8.1 “overlooked” in 2.8? the closer together the releases are, the worse it will look for WordPress

Cashing In On WordPress Plugin Development

@ Michael Torbert

those 12 custom plugins were for client projects, they paid for it.

anyways, let’s take a contact form plugin…there are many plugins to use. just because a plugin is a paid one, does not mean it is a good plugin.

When I said paying for a plugin, I meant more than $1/$1.99, I am not going to pay $9.99 for a plugin that does not do 100% of what I want that plugin to do. Yes I am willing to pay $9.99 or more for a plugin that does what I want it to do.

One plugin I don’t like the way it’s going it’s the next gen gallery, Until I find a replacement, NGG is on my site.

@Barry: if you are going to put plugins then support them, wether free or not. One of the best things about WordPress is that it is free. Just because some of your plugins are free, does it mean you won’t support it? NO, as an author of plugins (this applies to theme authors too) you need to support it, I will support authors who have the passion for WordPress and who are not greedy who think they deserve my money………….earn my donation. I have donated around $80 in the past 5ish years on plugins/themes authors of WordPress, PHPBB and other Open Source projects.

I think plugins should be free…if any author changes their plugin I am using on my site, I will search for another one that does the same thing, any function can be done by at least 5 plugins.

The average plugin will work with most WP installations but if a site specific customization is needed then obviously you need to pay.

Do you see the difference? Plugin = free, customization = not free

As plugin authors you should still support those free plugins, I have 12 customized plugins (all for different customer sites), I did my homework on plugin authors. The WordPress community would die if things went to a paid model.

I have given donations to plugin authors.

IT is up to ME to give the donation, it is up to ME to get a paid customization. Just like it is up to ME what I will be having for lunch in 30 minutes (I just ordered pizza).

That pizza I ordered it from one pizza chain in my area that has good quality pizza and it is cheaper.

I will pay for quality.

Is WordPress Information Too Fragmented?

To tell you the truth, the idea woudn’t work.

Egos, not the pancakes…There are so many WordPress “gurus”/”experts” out there.
Also I am not going to pay for support where I can get free support somewhere else.

If I like your plugin or theme, I will click the donation on your site and donate what I deem appropriate.

When you have these “experts” setting a price…let’s say $60 is the price (I have $60 in my pocket right now), how do I know I will get quality for that $60?

If you were to do this, you should make sure you get GOOD bloggers, Plugin authors, Coders, etc…I hate the ones who think that because their product (theme/plugin) is free that they shouldn’t offer support.

So many WordPress sites make me think: What the f*ck where you thinking when you click that PUBLISH button?

My WordCamp Columbus Experience

You should come to WCT10

Anyways…EVERY WordCamp should have a beginner session. We were all beginners at one point. There are some WordPress “experts” / “gurus” who have such huge egos.

1) Take the stick out of your ass.
2) Remember when you were a beginner?

The ideal WordCamp should have a NOOB track or at least one or two sessions dedicated to them.

WCT09 had three tracks, third one was a “GET SOCIAL”, meaning anyone could go up and present.

First Ohio WordPress Meetup A Success

The guy who ran WordCamp Toronto 2008 was sort of doing the meetups in Toronto. I signed up on that meeting site (it gave you a chance to rsvp and get updates), I had bad luck as I had work related issues/events dumped into me last minute for a few months. Eventually he gave up/quit/left.
I tried to take over the “group” but the website asked to pay to manage the group.

Anyways, no one too over the meetup (i think that’s the name of the website), it went the way of the dodo bird. I would love to start a WordPress meet up – monthly maybe?
I have no idea how to start it, I could talk to the people running WordCamp Toronto 2009 which are Toronto’s open source culture group. I just don’t know how to go about it.

By the way, why are you not speaking at WordCamp Toronto 2009? This fact alone is making me cry in my bed night after night. Man I need a new pillow cover.

Use WordPress As A CMS

Link does not work, even the domain says ADDRESS NOT FOUND

Cliff Note Version Of WordCamp Germany

Matt should make WordPress 2.8 so webmasters can get rid of the WordPress RSS feeds and plugin news. I don’t need my clients to hear WordPress updates of plugins, WordPress itself and so forth.
I should be able to decide what I will let Editors/Authors/Subscribers see. Me not showing the plugins news or WP rss feed will NOT kill WordPress.
