Clone Themes Are Bad Mmmkay

@Kel – Yes, I did miss at first that the TweetPress theme does take the background image and colors from your Twitter profile directly through the API. The creator of the theme was quick to correct me on that. I also added an update to the post with that information (with a link to the comment).

Like redwall_hp said though, a number of other elements present in the theme are not provided by the Twitter API such as the logo (the TweetPress creator hinted he would be removing that in a future version) among other things.

Would You Like To Hear An Interview With Anil Dash?

Sure, why not? I think he would have a lot of knowledge to offer in an interview, plus it’s always nice to hear another perspective from a competing platform.

WPChat – A New Hangout For WordPress Folks

Thanks for posting about this Jeff. Every time someone comes in with the username “Matt” for example, the chat gets pretty sidetracked as they’re wondering if it’s the Matt, someone else named Matt, or an impersonator.

Still a little torn on what to do, even requiring registration won’t completely solve the problem. It will at least help a bit if say, they post on their Twitter account confirming they have registered a certain username at WP Chat.

Small Potato Coming Back Again

I’m a big fan of Small Potato and his work, although I can’t help but be a little skeptical. How long have we been hearing rumors that he’s “coming back” only to be let down again?

Things have changed in the WordPress community and there’s much stiffer competition in the theme market nowadays. Hopefully he can bring something new and unique to the table.

Interview With Leland Of Themelab.com

Thanks again for the interview Jeff. Just a small note, the Simply Minimal theme which you had a screenshot to is available here (not on ThemeLab.com) for free download. I also use this theme on my personal site/blog.

CodePoet.com – New Home For WordPress Consultants

So does this mean the page on Automattic.com will be phased out soon?

First Signs Of WordPress Using BuddyPress With Project Wide Profiles

Very cool, first I’ve heard of this. Here’s my profile in case anyone was wondering: http://profiles.wordpress.org/lelandf/

Must be missing this, but how do I add people as friends? Don’t see a link or anything like that anywhere.

Roll Your Own URL Shortener With Pretty Link

Ever since the “shut down” of tr.im I’ve been using URL shortening on my own domain. Even though they’ve come back online, I think it serves as a reminder you really can’t trust these third-party URL shorteners. I’ll admit bit.ly seems to be build on a pretty solid foundation though.

Personally I’ve used the method Justin Tadlock mentioned above (example.com/?p=xxx) as well as a plugin called Twitter Friendly Links. Even the free version of Pretty Link seems to have more features though.

I’d like to know why Matt thinks this plugin a “rip-off.” I think people looking for more fine-tuned control over things like SEO and tracking with their personal URL shortener will find value in the Pretty Link plugin. Good job with it Blair.

Listener Poll: What’s the most important selling point for you when it comes to purchasing a theme?

Design for me. I believe this is the most important factor when initially selecting and purchasing a theme. I doubt most theme buyers are going to actually look at the code quality (unless they’re technically savvy). They’ll just buy it, and if there’s a problem, ask for support later.

I generally don’t need support when it comes to WordPress themes, but I can imagine that would be another major factor for people just starting out.

Price isn’t a huge factor for me as long as it’s reasonable. Obviously I wouldn’t want to be spending a ridiculous amount of money for a theme lots of people are going to have anyway.

Personally I don’t really care about the license either. Sure GPL themes are the least restrictive, but if there’s a really good design that I want to use, I’ll live with it.

Business reputation is an interesting choice. I can certainly see myself being more likely to buy a theme from one of the big names rather than a site I’ve never heard of before.

Themes At War

I was initially excited about Theme Wars and thought it was a pretty cool idea, but after Carl pointed out that all the themes were sold anyway, turns out the voting is pretty much pointless.

@Dan Cole, I think you’re right. Looking at the FAQ it says, “No. Unfortunately, we aren’t offering any resale agreements at this time,” which seems to imply that the themes aren’t GPL.

Want Small Potato To Create A New Design For You?

I’ve been following Kwim.me for a while now. Great place to check out every once and a while for PSD designs.

I think it’s very cool what he’s doing, although I wonder if he’s going to get back into the WordPress game again?

Listener Poll: Should there be a page on the plugin repository for Commercial GPL plugins?

While I think themes and plugins should be treated equally, there just doesn’t seem to be the same market for commercial plugins like there is for commercial themes. Have you ever seen a “plugin club”?

Like Matt said in this interview, commercial plugins are already in the plugin repository. Akismet is the only one I can think of, although I’m sure there would be others as long as they’re 100% GPL compatible.

Not sure if there is enough demand pay-to-download (or otherwise commercial) GPL plugins that would warrant its own dedicated page on the plugin repository, like there is now for themes.

Ad Block Plus Not Needed Here

I use Ad Block Plus too, although like Jleuze, I disable it on certain credible sites such as WP Tavern where I know the advertising is unintrusive and interesting to me.

Just for the record, I enabled it now and it looks like all six 125×125 ads and the 468×60 ad in the header are all still displayed with the default ABP settings. Not sure if this is a feature of OIO Publisher or what that has a workaround.

TalkPress bbPress Domain Dilemma

@Chip: That’s a good point which I didn’t really consider. Since WordPress.com is pretty much free for all, while TalkPress.com is much more selective.

@Kyle: Yes, in retrospect maybe this post would have been better suited towards a domain-related blog. I know you have some background in domains so your comment is greatly appreciated.

» Posted By Leland On May 28, 2009 @ 4:41 PM

@Ozh: Not really trying to start arguments here, but do you understand the concept of “typo” traffic? This has been around for a while. Just because your family members use Google to find domains doesn’t mean the whole world does.

» Posted By Leland On May 28, 2009 @ 7:47 AM

@Ryan: I understand your point. Keep in mind however that I was writing this post from a domainer’s perspective. I guess the fact that bbpress.org is aimed at “site administrators” make up for the poor choice of domain?

Six Apart Bridging The Gap

With all the silly Six Apart vs. Automattic stuff that’s gone down in the past, I think it’s great that Six Apart are making WordPress plugins to tap into their services (like TypePad Antispam). This sentence pretty much sums up my thoughts: “In the end however, end users receive the most benefit”

Matt Takes Notice Of Gorilla Project

I read this comment by Jeremie where he says, “but if this project grow too fast or too big for us to maintain, we might have no choice but to offer paid support.”

So I guess paid support may be a possibility in the distant future? Probably something like Automattic’s Support Network, where people could use the free support forums (like on wordpress.org) but could get “enterprise level” support straight from the source.

I think the main goal at this point is just to get the project going with new theme releases, and a community built up.

Wanna WordPress Wiki

Nice review Ryan. The wiki plugin probably wouldn’t be useful for a traditional blog, however for some WordPress-powered website for some sort of software (like WordPress), maybe this would be useful for documentation pages.

Just to clarify, is this the same plugin as on http://wp-wiki.org/?

Leland Returns! ThemeLab To Continue

Weird, I didn’t even see this post until just now…even though I’ve been visiting WPTavern daily, lol. I guess I’ve just been going straight to the forum.

Anyway, thanks a lot Jeff for the mention. I really appreciate it.
