Displaying 1 To 8 Of 8 Comments WordPress News Sites And The Bermuda Triangle Hi Jeff, Sorry to hear the news, but I can completely understand. Back when I started there was a big need for WordPress news and resources; however, WordPress has evolved a lot since those early days and i’m not sure there is a need anymore without a product to support it (custom themes, premium themes/plugins, consulting work, etc.). I personally got burnt out after about 3 years of actively maintaining WPHacks.com, so I think you sold it at about the right time. Hopefully the new owner carries on your legacy, but if not, you earned the chance to walk off into the sunset. Best of luck to you! » Posted By Kyle Eslick On January 30, 2013 @ 5:12 PM Have a good vacation! I’m taking a mini-vacation myself soon as well, but I could only pull myself away for two days! We’ll be here when you get back… » Posted By Kyle Eslick On September 19, 2009 @ 6:28 PM Have You Enjoyed Your Stay At The Tavern So Far? Although my time to participate in the discussion is limited, I do love the site and think you picked a great domain to develop on. 8) In addition to news, it definitely gives people an outlet for discussing their WordPress-related thoughts and ideas, which makes your site unique (has its own niche!). » Posted By Kyle Eslick On August 22, 2009 @ 9:38 AM Are We Afraid To Do What We Want With Our Blogs? That would be a nice plugin for someone with a short domain name, but I prefer YouRLs so far. You can then register a domain like WPURL.com or something and build your own URL shortener easily! You can also open it up to the public or provide private logins. Here is a detailed write up from Lifehacker. » Posted By Kyle Eslick On August 21, 2009 @ 9:33 AM Approve, Delete, Spam – How Do You Treat Specific Comments? The human spammers have definitely increased a lot over the past few months, and I’ve had a similar change in how I handle comments. In fact, I’ve been doing pretty similar to what you do. Removing URL’s, updating the name (if the email address shows a real name), etc. What I don’t understand is why people bother. Are they hoping for click-throughs from human readers of the comments? None of my sites do the whole DoFollow thing, so there is no SEO value for them to leave these comments on any of my websites…. » Posted By Kyle Eslick On August 4, 2009 @ 11:32 AM Listener Poll: What Day Of The Week Should I Record WordPress Weekly? I personally don’t listen to the live show (prefer to just download the podcasts and enjoy at my convenience), so I’m fine with whatever. If I was able to listen live, however, I would prefer any night Monday through Thursday. That said, I guess whichever times work best for potential guests on the show would be best. Friday seems to work well for people and you’ve had a ton of great guests on Friday nights, but I’m sure that night doesn’t work for everyone. Maybe once a month you could have a bonus show on a Tuesday or Thursday and squeeze in those guests that can’t make a Friday night show. » Posted By Kyle Eslick On August 4, 2009 @ 11:48 AM Is WordPress Information Too Fragmented? Great writeup (as usual) Jeff! In my personal opinion, the WordPress community as a whole is not like other communities in that when someone does good work, others will promote it. I’ve never really looked at the other blogs in our niche as competition, and so I’ve always tried to either feature good work others do, or at least work a link into a post to help them out. Others have done the same for WPHacks and it has really helped the site grow. In most niches, people act like their competition doesn’t even exist! The one area where you’d think the community thing wouldn’t apply is with the premium theme designers, but they even help each other out and run ideas off each others (at least the top few do). That is the great thing about the WordPress community and I think Matt is a big reason why. He’s very passionate and his mindset has rubbed off on the community. On a side note, it is funny you mention WPCandy and WPHacks working together, as I remember Michael and I once discussed collaborating on a WordPress ebook. I honestly don’t remember why it never happened, but I remember discussing it a few years ago. I ended up writing and releasing one on my own a couple months later. » Posted By Kyle Eslick On June 3, 2009 @ 9:17 AM TalkPress bbPress Domain Dilemma Leland, Don’t let these other commenters get you down. You are approaching this through the eyes of a domainer, which is a different view of most people :) I don’t think Automattic needs to own BBPress.com (and they can’t anyway if someone else has it, develops it, and has a legitmate claim to the domain), but I think they should consider changing the name, whether that be TalkPress or something else. As to your point about typo traffic, yes, many people use direct navigation (i call it natural traffic) to a domain. Thing is, when they get there it is obvious that it isn’t what they are looking for so they will search for it. The times this is a problem is when direct navigation is going to a competitor’s website, or that of a similar product or service. That is when you NEED to own the .com. Great post, as always! » Posted By Kyle Eslick On May 28, 2009 @ 9:05 AMComments Posted By Kyle Eslick
