500 Plugins To Possibly Be Purged From The Repository

@Andrew Nacin – I’m not running a news desk here where I ping people all day long about stuff. Just about everything I write is based on publicly available information with sometimes my personal interpretation of that information which in some cases is totally wrong. But in this case, based on what Otto said and the compiled list, I found it completely reasonable to suggest that there was the possibility of those 499 items in the spreadsheet to be purged from the repository for having non-compatible licenses.

The ticket was created 11 months ago so that’s why I said the discussion has been ongoing for 11 months. I suppose I could have said that “However, discussion has ramped up on the topic within the past few days” or something to that effect but that’s just semantics.

I even quoted you that you said the team was going to get together for discussion on the topic which would have been a nice pointer had anyone got involved in the comments that started assuming stuff. I even added the word possibly to the headline as nothing was set in stone. These things are evolving stories and until your last comment on the track ticket, I don’t see anything out of the ordinary with what I wrote or how I wrote it. After the core team discussed the matter and the results of the meeting were published, I would have written an update post or added the information to the bottom of this post. Which I’ve already done.

WPTavern Watering Hole Still Open For Business

@Ted Clayton – I don’t advertise the forum as often as I should. It’s been a long time since I encouraged anyone to sign up. The reason for the age thing is to comply with COPPA which doesn’t allow anyone under the age of 13 or so to register to the site without written consent from a legal guardian.

Regarding the quiz question, it’s not so much a quiz question but one that needs to be answered by a human being. This method of approving new accounts has worked well over the past two years. I realize that for some, it’s a pain in the rear to register but on the flip side, it enables me to determine who’s human and who’s not. I have bots browsing and registering to the forum all the time and I had to do something to prevent those accounts from being registered.

If you can find me a clean and simple and just the facts registration for vBulletin while eliminating all spam accounts from having to suck up my time, I may have to give you a million bucks for the solution.

Open Source Scotland Cancelled

@Andreas Nurbo – Out of curiosity, if I did publish a post outlining my thoughts on how everything went down, it wouldn’t mean much now, would it?

Some Orgnizations And WordPress Just Don’t Mix

Matt Mullenweg To Be In Charge Of The 2012 Default Theme

@Jane Wells – Out of curiosity, between now and the time in which you were hired by Automattic to work on WordPress, do you recall of anything that was added to core and then in a later release, removed based on negative feedback whether it was constructive criticism or not? I’ve tried to think of a feature or something but I can’t come up with anything.

@Kevinjohn Gallagher – I wish that were on video that we could all watch.

I believe it was Peter Westwood as you point out in the following post.

Removing The Browser Nag Bar In WordPress

I used IE 9 to test out whether I would see the nag bar or not and I didn’t see it. Because of that, I also didn’t see the screens options area where I could simply remove the nag box which I thought you could do in earlier versions. If that’s still around, it definitely negates the need to use a plugin.

Case Study On How WordPress Won The Crown

@Kevinjohn Gallagher – Well, I knew someone was going to play THAT card against me, might as well be you :) I agree that just because a large amount of people use something, it doesn’t mean it’s the best. However, there are plenty of other options that exist that are free and open-source but a large percentage of people have chosen to use WordPress instead of the other content management systems. Are those people idiots or are they sticking with WordPress in the long run because it fulfills most of their needs and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to use the software?

I only run one Website, this one. I’ve used different content management systems in the past such as Joomla and Drupal and therefor, my perspective of them is skewed based on that experience, not current use. So far, WordPress has not given me a reason to look at, test, or use a different system for publishing and managing content. By the way, we can go back and forth all day long as to what a CMS actually is, but I use WordPress to Manage my published content and therefor, I consider it a CMS although I also consider it to be a publishing platform. You don’t see WordPress as a CMS, I do.

@Dave Doolin – If WordPress ends up putting all that crap into the core, it will become the 20% of the feature base that I’ll ignore. As a one man site author, I don’t need all that jazz. I need what WordPress offers today and thankfully what it doesn’t have, can be supplemented with some great plugins. But if WordPress starts to become some corporate thing that ends up satisfying most of the things that Kevin mentions, then I’ll end up being pushed to the edge case in terms of why I should use the software.

So the question then becomes, how does WordPress maintain the strengths it has today in terms of why it’s so popular with users all across the board in terms of skill levels but also implement most of what Kevin thinks WordPress needs to be considered a true CMS?

» Posted By Jeffro On December 6, 2011 @ 3:46 AM

@Kevinjohn Gallagher – So what if instead, I said it’s the best in breed in terms of content publishing? It’s the best in breed in something. How else do you explain it’s popularity and why so many people choose to run with it instead of going with the hundreds of other options out there?

Automattic Makes Second Investment – WPEngine

@Julian Suvarez – Not really. There has been an onslaught of news and stories regarding Automattic as of late but it’s not as if I’m solely covering them and not anything else. It’s what’s in the news and I’ve chosen to share my thoughts on what I think is interesting or note worthy. Stick around for awhile, you’ll see the variety.

Crummy Advertising On WordPress.com

@Geoff – To my surprise, the YouTube embeds were actually playable videos from YouTube. I thought they would just be screencaps. But the videos had nothing to do with the content they were displayed under.

@Dougal Campbell – That’s what I was thinking. One of the biggest problems is relevancy and context which is a problem already solved for them considering they already know the most trafficked sites that talk about specific subjects. All they would need is a good sales/marketing team that could purchase the context relevant advertising to display on those sites. Then again, perhaps Automattic really has no interest in pursuing that route and that’s why they’ve decided to partner up with Federated Media instead.

Please Don’t Use The Post Title As A Hyperlink

So here’s the deal. I’ve come to expect that if I click on the title of a post, what I’m really clicking on is a permalink to that post, NOT a link that will take me to some other website. My first thought when that happens is that something is broken. The last time I checked, Post Formats were a way in which folks could visually establish what type of content was within the post, not actually changing the behavior of the post. Whether the post is just a link or not, at the very beginning it’s a post and I’d like to see it behave as one. My preferred method of the use of the Link Post Format is to have an icon or some other visual queue that lets me know that the post is more of a link and then see some comment or a couple of sentences with the post and the first link within the content is what is used as the link.

How To Insert Links Inside Of Image Captions

@Ipstenu – I’ve noticed that you’ve been the one pruning and going through the ideas area lately. Glad someone’s doing it! I had thought that someone from the core team marked it as a good idea but it makes sense considering the trac ticket and all.

@Abhishek – I think a number of people would end up using it since so many people use images that they didn’t create.

@Scott R. Godin – This interview I conducted with Andrew Ozz in 2009 might shed some light on that. http://www.wptavern.com/interview-with-andrew-ozz-mr-visual-editor

Revamping The 404 Page For The Plugin Repository

@Syed Balkhi – I tried going to a made up plugin name and instead of being redirected to the front page of the repository, I now get a search box and a page saying Whoops We Couldn’t Find What You Were Looking For with a list of similar plugins based on relevance. Much better than what we had previously. Props to You and Otto for that one.

Things To Look For In WordPress 3.3 Beta 1

Four Common Sense Ways To Improve Security On Your WordPress Powered Site

@Ade – I don’t think it’s that overblown, especially after using the Limit Login Attempts plugin for a few months. In 99% of the cases in which an IP address is trying to log into the site, the username of admin is being used. Some of the IP addresses have tried multiple times with the username of admin only to get locked out thanks to the plugin.

When I installed WordPress, I made myself an administrator and deleted the admin account. The author account is good advice, but too much of an inconvenience to me for it to be worth while. I’m definitely using a strong password though.

How eMusic Transitioned From Clunky CMS To WordPress

@john – Well John, thanks for bringing this to my attention. From the outside looking in, it looks like quite a few people are upset that some of the features they have come to love have either disappeared or broke. Some of that anger I can guess goes towards people not liking change. However, if I were a paying customer and things that I used were broken without clear and updated communication from the people in charge, I;d be pretty upset too.

I hope the issues can be resolved soon. At the very least, someone should be constantly updating the forum threads as keeping in the know is a 100% better than being in the dark.

@donnacha of WordSkill – I think in your case, you used [URL] to try and make certain text a link instead of the Anchor tag. That’s the only thing I can think of since the [URL] didn’t work, I edited your comment so that the correct code was used for the link.

Know of any plugins off hand that does what you suggest that I can try on the site?
