How To Screw Up Your Image

@Andrea_R – You have not been the first person to tell me similar stories. The bottom line is, Chris is a huge part of Thesis. What he says and does in the public eye reflects on his company whether he likes it or not. When you make a mistake like he did in public, pretty much bashing the heck out of one of his biggest fans, as a customer, you have to ask yourself if this is the kind of person you want to do business with.

@Chip Bennett – Yes, that’s what I said but at some point, the GPL plays a role in this whole shindig. I wonder how much difference it would have made if Costa released a Thesis like theme but didn’t use the name Thesis in it.

» Posted By Jeffro On May 1, 2009 @ 9:47 AM

@Paul – I wonder if Costa would have been sued if Matt or Automattic would have backed the guy helping him with legal fees and what not to at least get a ruling to decide one way or the other.

» Posted By Jeffro On May 1, 2009 @ 7:33 AM

@Paul – Your first point I easily addressed as what is reality. Ask most customers GPL or not and I’m guessing that reason for purchasing a theme is not on their radar.

Your second point steers me down the GPL highway again. I don’t think the GPL has anything to do with publishing books as its mostly for code. So I draw the line with code. With CSS and Images it’s a pretty fuzzy line but I side with those two things not being able to fall under the GPL.

I’ve mainly published this post to offer my own opinions on what happened as well as to educate other theme business owners that this is probably not the way to go about handling this situation. It was a mistake out in the open for others to learn from. Because the Thesis theme relies heavily on Chris Pearson as the owner/spokeperson, the way he reacts or handles himself in public reflects back on his company and in this instance, it doesn’t look good at all. In one of his tweets, he mentions intellectual honesty. I’m wondering if this has anything to do with Thesis being Chris Pearson’s intellectual property. If so, what in Thesis do you think could be branded IP? I’m guessing everything that is not WordPress.

Vote For The New Header Design

@Kim – I actually used a backend where the Ozh’s drop down menu was being used and it was a pretty cool experience. Interesting that some of your concerns like changing the interface so soon after 2.7 was one of the things discussed in the result post.

Saying Goodbye To Drupal And Hello To WordPress

@Ryan – Hmm, and I’ve been seeing quite a few big name websites moving from TypePade to WordPress. I suppose they are balancing out?

WPInformer Launches – More WordPress Stuff

@Aaron D. Campbell – No problem Aaron, I want to provide the warm welcome to new WordPress informative sites that I received when I launched. That review of the show should be interesting heh.

@Alex Vorn -i tell you what, you have a pretty cool looking design :) maybe I’ll do a small writeup about your site as well here in the near future.

Your Plugin Ideas Are Needed

@Trace – that sounds like a pretty cool idea. Just wondering though if you put all these code snippets across the theme/site i that would decrease site performance.

@Kym Huynh – heh, funny you should mention that. Have you given this plugin a try? http://wp-hive.com/

Compilation Of Theme Frameworks

@Spamboy – Thanks for that. I didn’t mean to imply a ranked list. I’ve edited the post to reflect the change

WebDevStudios Introduces Support Packages

@Brad – Yeah, the overall design has that cold water feel just like the Bering sea. You guys did a good job with that WooTheme.

Two WordPress Migration Tips

@Kel – I can’t remember if it was or not. Do you have a link or something that could refresh my memory? I was all over the place the other day regarding htaccess.

Matt Takes Notice Of Gorilla Project

By the way, looks like they will be changing their domain name along with the entire name of the project.

» Posted By Jeffro On May 1, 2009 @ 10:49 AM

@Leland – Well, that would make more sense to me as I can’t see theme developers doing great work just for the benefit of the community. It would be nice in an ideal world, but we don’t live in one of those lol.

@Carl Hancock – To be honest, when I saw Matts Tweet, I thought he was talking about that other Gorilla Themes place which is why I was intrigued at first. Turns out it was a completely different project. Like you, I think if they get big enough, their could be some feathers ruffled between the two forcing a name change.

Matt The Domain Guru Strikes Again

@hd-J – Hmm valid point regarding branding but I could see them offering a choice to end users on which domain they would like to have as part of their URL. I bet the majority would pick WP.com.

@Edward Caissie – What do you mean by hosted blog service for the shortened URL? You mean create a new WordPress.com built on top of WP.com?

@Patrick D. – I didn’t think of that. Man, I hope not, that would make it a REAL PAIN to have a WordPress related domain if you could not have

WPWeekly Episode 52 – Matt Mullenweg Interview

@Dgold -Glad you enjoyed the episode. I think this makes three interview now I’ve conducted with Matt :)

» Posted By Jeffro On May 22, 2009 @ 7:32 PM

@ShelbyLife – Thanks Shelby. The showdown was an interesting tidbit in the show and I thought it was great to hear Matts thoughts on what it was like to develop something using the software instead of trying to make it better.

Some Not Happy With Greetbox Updates

@Ryan – I’m all for opt-in rather than opt-out and I can understand the reasons behind opt-out being the default choice but it doesn’t sit well with me when software makes choices for me unless I explicitly allow that to happen.

@Andrea_R – I think there would actually either be a plugin which does what greetbox does but with no ads or someone would simply rip out the ads in greetbox and re-release the plugin. consumer gets free goods but producer still gets paid somehow. That is where the conundrum lies.

First Ohio WordPress Meetup A Success

@Miroslav Glavic – Hmm, I suppose I could write an article providing some tips on how to do one but essentially, find someone local in your area who is into WP that you can partner up with. I wouldn’t recommend going at it alone although it’s certainly possible.

With regards to speaking, I have never been invited to speak at a WordCamp event before and even if I were, I would have no idea on what to talk about as I don’t have a particular skillset in which I’m a pro at. However, I would love to fulfill the role as a panel moderator which is mostly what I do on WordPress Weekly. Maybe a panel on the GPL ant themes? LOL

@Mark – I know it’s a long drive from Toledo to Akron but after talking to Brian this day, time, and location is what works out best for the both of us. All of the other days and times simply don’t coincide well together. Any chance you could organize a northwest Ohio meetup? Jeff Lee resides around Norwalk Ohio and I bet Toledo would be a much quicker drive than to Akron.

» Posted By Jeffro On April 27, 2009 @ 7:58 AM

@John (Human3rror) – yes you do. They are a blast. Not sure if they are better than a wordcamp event but I think of them as mini wordcamps. the lively discussions alone are worth it.

Wanna WordPress Wiki

@Ryan – Thank you for writing it. Perhaps it’s just me, but can you see the Codex moving off of media wiki to perhaps a custom WordPress install which is more oriented towards being a codex. It already has post revisions built in.

WordCamp Central Redesigned

@Stefan Vervoort – Awesome, WordCamps are great events, nothing like chatting it up face to face in real time. I think you’ll find that you get more done talking WordPress face to face in one hour than in dealing with twitter, forums, comments, etc.

Plugin Style Settings – Database Or CSS?

@Carl Hancock – I like your approach. With regards to too many static CSS files, I agree which is why I tend to lean towards the styling being saved in the database with the plugin options table rather than purely styled from a CSS file.

All in all, seems like your hybrid approach would probably work out best, catering to normal and power users.
