Listener Poll: Is WordPress A Community Run Project?

Well, I have changed my mind in that Matt Mullenweg is really not the sole decision maker for the WordPress.org software anymore. As I’ve discussed with a few people and have witnessed what goes on in the Developer chats, the decision process is spread amongst a few people, namely the core commiters who then delegate feature development to whomever wants to take a stab at it. Those who participate in the dev chat get a say with the topics discussed in the chat and you can vote yes or no or provide alternatives or whatever.

Also based on my discussions, Matt appears to be more involved from a development standpoint with WordPress.com and not so much with WordPress.org. He is more of a delegator than anything else.

So with all that in mind and what I’ve experienced, I say the WordPress project is definitely community driven with plenty of opportunities to voice an opinion and contribute to the project without one persons purpose getting in the way.

Help Shape WordPress 2.9

@Conorp – LOL I think that has to do with conical URL’s for SEO.

@JLeuze – Yeah, that was more in line with what I thought the term meant but I think in this case, it’s for third party plugins not necessarily plugins maintained by the core devs.

@Darren Hoyt – I think it would be easy to figure out what those plugins are with the data the WordPress API collects from plugins installed on all of the self hosted WordPress installs.

@Ron – Your comment actually answers Conorps suggestion of what Canonical.php is for. Don’t think aliases has anything to do with these plugins.

@Martin – Yeah, sounds good but I don’t like the idea of extending the workload of the core developers by having to maintain these types of plugins.

@westi – Well then, that explains it and what I was looking for. Now it makes sense.

Aaron Brazell Author Of ‘The WordPress Bible’

I know that with WordPress For Dummies which is published under the same company, Lisa is able to provide updates in PDF format that are available for free from her site and the Dummies.com site while every 18-24 months, she writes a new revision of the entire book to bring it all up to date.

I don’t see the WordPress bible being able to go down the same route due to the length of the book but who knows. If it contains most of the guts of WordPress, I don’t see that changing much due to backwards compatibility so I think the book will be a valuable resource for a long time.

WPWeekly Episode 62 – Celebrating The Freedoms Of The GPL

Yep. Looks like we have our first three winners this week. I’ll be updating the scorecard in a little bit.

» Posted By Jeffro On July 6, 2009 @ 3:15 PM

@Conorp – Hmm, no. Interesting since registered users to the site would be able to define their local timezone but since I don’t do registrations on this site, it doesn’t work that way. I’ll have to look into that.

» Posted By Jeffro On July 6, 2009 @ 4:08 AM

@JLeuze – I can at least say I tried. Not sure if I pulled it off or not but it was a different spin on the GPL lol.

@Conorp – Not sure what he beat you to. Maybe with the air cleared a bit from the post on the dev blog, it won’t be so bad now. Perhaps I’ll get back into publishing content from across the web outside of the GPL topic like I said I was going to do

My Thoughts On The Virtual WordCamp

@JLeuze – I agree Josh and I believe that is what has been the source of the confusion and mild backlash against the event.

WordPress Dev Chat For 7-1-09

Thanks for the awesome feedback guys. I’ll try to be there on a weekly basis and provide these cliff notes at the end of each meeting. If you can make it to one of these, I highly encourage it as it’s a blast.

Bad Comment Karma

Thanks all for the help. It’s not that I didn’t know it was part of core or that the thought crossed my mind. The only thought on my mind was that I had installed comment karma at some point and that field was left over from the plugin which was not the case because the table that plugin creates is different.

So, I deleted something of core I thought was plugin related, that’s all. And thanks to Stephen, I know why it screwed up the comment system.

Testing WP iPhone App

@JLeuze – it’s great for handheld blogging especially being able to sync up and make it go public once you have a data connection. Great for moderating and replying to cmments as well

» Posted By Jeffro On July 1, 2009 @ 5:27 AM

@Conorp -Most likely true. But, if you can become a great typer using the visual keyboard, it shouldn’t take long to write a blog post. Probably good for just those small, update type posts.

Sorry about that guys. Talkshoe was having issues with their storage server which is why the files ended up disappearing. I just gave downloading a try and it appears to be working again. If not, let me know.

Listener Poll: Do You Know The Difference Between WordPress.com And WordPress.org?

@Kevin Paquet – This is an ongoing thing that those in the know must continue to do until the branding has changed for one or the other, something which is not likely to happen anytime soon. There are plenty of blog posts summarizing the differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com but for the most part, I don’t remember seeing this information on either of the WordPress.com or WordPress.org sites. Maybe that would help?

» Posted By Jeffro On July 6, 2009 @ 4:14 AM

Thanks guys for chiming in. The purpose of this poll was just to see if people knew the difference or not. I knew going in what the results would most likely be but hey, what the heck. Glad to see I was right in at least the people that follow this site know the difference between the two.

The First Virtual WordCamp

@Ryan – The whole virtual being more expensive than physical is was set my alarm to go off. But, who knows. Maybe this thing will sell out, they will make $70,000.00 or so and when people find this out, perhaps WordCamp Attendee fees will skyrocket?

@Miroslav Glavic – Considering there is no way in the world I’d give the tavern up for free, looks like you’re not attending LOL.

@Chip Bennett – You raise a lot of interesting points but at this stage of the game, I’m willing to withhold judgment regarding this entire event until the end of July into August. By then, we should have a clear indication as to what is going on. Would be a shame if everything you pointed out turned into reality.

@Brad – If this pans out, it has the makings of a cool event. What would you speak about?

@Martin – You mean, I should have waited before publishing anything about this event? It’s news and it’s a cool idea so I thought I’d spread the word. I can always do a follow up post once we know more info.

@JLeuze – I’m withholding judgment as well. If they do make 70k off of this, I hope there are no residual effects with regards to other WordCamps. There is no denying that one of the best things about WordCamps is the relatively cheap cost associated with them (on average). I’m in agreement with some in the community that if you’re hosting a WordCamp primarily to generate income, I think you’re doing it for the wrong reason.

Well, glad to hear there is interest in something like a TavernCamp lol. Doesn’t sound as cool as a WordCamP but I’ll keep in mind for future projects down the road.

State Of The Word From San Francisco

@Michael Torbert – Yeah, too bad those WordCamp shirts are not available all year long. Although I can see the point. If you have a shirt but you didn’t attend the event, isn’t that kind of weird?

@Ryan – I agree. There is quite a bit of information that I could turn into a few blog posts in the near future which is what I am going to do.

@Andreas Nurbo – I agree. I think he could have went on for a few more minutes but how great is it that this topic had some air time in front of a huge audience?

Listener Poll: How Should I Review A Theme?

Thanks for all of the comments guys and gals! After reading them all, it seems like reviewing a theme could be a bigger pain in the neck than what is necessary. But if you’re going to do a thorough review, I suppose it would be worth it. However, right now I’m thinking a fresh install of WordPress with the WPCandy post content XML file would make for an equal base for all themes that I review.

Cashing In On WordPress Plugin Development

@Will Anderson – Yeah, if something like this were to happen, it would probably be done through a third party. Mandatory donations are going to upset people one way or another. I really don’t want to see a repeat of what happened with themes.

Something we were talking about in the IRC channel which I think is cool is how plugin authors could publish a roadmap or feature set and then end users bid like an auction on various features or something like that. If the prices were affordable, I think a creative plugin author could pull this off. He only works after he gets paid and he is paid through donations for particular features.

» Posted By Jeffro On June 17, 2009 @ 8:46 AM

@Andrea_R – Well, if that has been his stance, he has obviously changed his mind, at least with themes or else he wouldn’t bother linking to GPL compliant commercial themes. I think that whatever happens, if it’s GPL, it’s ok by Matt. He wants to see people succeed using WordPress whether it be from consulting, a business, or providing services. One thing he certainly doesn’t want is a massive amount of confusion which is why commercial themes and free themes are not mixed together in the same repository.

» Posted By Jeffro On June 17, 2009 @ 7:41 AM

@Justin Parks – Hey Justin, thanks for stopping by. Cool to see you step up and donate a few bucks. I myself have donated at least $70.00 so far to a few different plugin authors. I need to donate more.
