Do You Think WordPress Is Secure?

Thanks for all the great feedback regarding the poll, makes it a bit livelier. I voted that it was a trick question because although WordPress 2.8.4 could be stated to be secure, it’s only secure until someone finds a vulnerability. If the vulnerability is discovered in 2.8.4 it means that it existed during the time I thought the version was secure when really it wasn’t.

Security This, Security That

@Elpie – I’ll buy your argument of not upgrading because of accessibility issues but not for anything else.

Clients who do not want their sites worked on every few weeks obviously don’t understand the nature of the web or web based software. Better education up front would solve this problem.

Sites that use custom plugins or code really should have taken it upon themselves to check with the developer to make sure it was coded in such a way to not interfere with the core of WordPress or provide deep integration without an easy way to upgrade the parent software. Again, this is what I consider to be a short sighted stance of using WordPress. Make a decision today, it haunts you tomorrow.

I see nothing wrong with that release cycle. It tells me that the folks behind WordPress are true to their ‘Word’ in that when their is a security issue that has been addressed, it will be pushed out asap for us to take advantage of. Let’s flip the coin here and say that 2.8.4, 2.8.3, and 2.8.2, were not released because of the fear of too many releases in too short of time. Meanwhile, a security bulletin goes out to the public saying their is a major vulnerability in the software along with a proof of concept of the code. Now all the hackers get to exploit all the blogs they like. I prefer the former versus the latter.

As for a list of the files revised, generally, a page is created on the Codex for that specific version of WordPress. For example, WordPress 2.8.3 http://codex.wordpress.org/Version_2.8.3 however, you usually have to go to the WordPress Trac to download the changed files for the version changeset. I suppose it would be nice to have that information upfront as part of the release post.

The only patch the patch that occurred was I believe 2.8.3 which missed some things in 2.8.1. That was a blunder. The other things addressed separate issues.

If it weren’t for the damn hackers and worms, we wouldn’t have to worry about all of this lol.

Plugin Repository And Commercial Plugins

@JLeuze – Me too. Although it’s already been stated that half baked plugins with hidden features that are somehow unlocked after you pay up will not be allowed. So in a sense, all plugins on the repository should fulfill their need without playing any tricks on users.

First Signs Of WordPress Using BuddyPress With Project Wide Profiles

hmm, just about all of the links on the left side of my profile page trigger a search for a user with that name. so the url WPTavern.com triggers a search for a user named WPTavern.com lol.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 9:33 PM

@Andrea_R – I guess that means we can go back in time and see how you’ve progressed :)

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 9:12 PM

@Justin Tadlock – Sheesh, that certainly sums up your plugin contributions

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 8:38 PM

Right now, the register links points to a user account named Register LOL. Also the same for Blogs. Andy is scrambling right now I think as that stuff is not supposed to be there.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 8:30 PM

This explains the Friendship stuff.

I just spoke with Andy Peatling and he says that the friends feature is going to be turned off on profiles for now and that it’s not supposed to be there. So no friendships for us!

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 8:24 PM

I’m with all of you. I guess we can’t add each other as friends or non of us has figured it out yet. Yet, Andy Peatling is listed as Mark Jaquiths friend lol.

@Kim – You must be very observant because this is the first I’ve come across this particular sub domain.

Vote For WordCamp New York Logo

@Jane Wells – Thanks for stopping by and responding Jane. Looking forward to seeing the stats afterwords regarding sponsorships purchased and the overall cost of putting the event together.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 10, 2009 @ 11:40 PM

@Steve Bruner – Well that sucks. Explains why I didn’t see any of those types of entries.

@Andrea_R – It reminds me of the WordCamp Chicago logo.

@Carl Hancock – Wow, if I could only make 10,000 I’d be one lucky mofo. WPTavern.com barely makes enough money for the cheapest sponsorship lol. Which means I won’t be signing up. Those are indeed some steep prices. Maybe Jane or someone organizing the event will stop by and explain why the high prices. Perhaps its just a test to see if anyone buys?

WPWeekly Episode 70 – Talking BuddyPress With Andy Peatling

Indeed, the correct number I was looking for was 45,390. I thought I could trick you all but this time, it didn’t work although I think I was pretty close.

As for the show itself, it feels like one of the best episodes I’ve recorded in a long time.

Interview With Adii Of WooThemes

@R.Bhavesh – Thanks although I can’t take credit for all of the questions considering just about half of the interview consists of them. But I think we all learned a thing or two in this interview which is what I strive for when I conduct them.

@Kevin Gilbert – I see you’re already sporting the AntiSocial theme. How has that worked out for you?

@Marcus Neto – Yeah. If there is a business model that works, no sense in reinventing the wheel. Just use the formula but put a unique spin on it.

I’ve fixed the ExpressionEngine space.

Magazine/News Themes The New Black?

No doubt citizen journalism will fuel these types of designs. I’m already starting to see quite a few local sites spring up focusing more within a small community that newspapers can’t cover as they mostly discuss big topics that can reach a national audience.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 2:17 AM

@Danny G Smith – Out of the ones I mentioned here, the Daily Edition looks awfully sweet with The Local coming in a close second. That’s my opinion. I also come from a Joomla background and I’m finally beginning to think that WordPress themes are catching up.

@Martin – Well, I noticed a brief period where not EVERY theme that was being released was a news/magazine type layout. That is why I said it decreased somewhat but it never disappeared.

@Carl Hancock – I guess so. As I mentioned to Martin, I noticed that there was a bit more variety of theme and layout types arriving on the scene but now it looks like we are heading into another splash of themes with the news/magazine layouts. I imagine if they weren’t popular, they wouldn’t keep releasing themes of that style

Does Scheduling Posts Freak You Out?

So thankfully, I’m not the only one that freaked out when I schedule a post. Means I’m not crazy!

@scribu – Thanks for putting in the ticket for me. I would have eventually tried my hand but I wanted to figure out first if it was actually an issue other people agreed with first.

@westi – Thanks Westi for approving the patch and putting it in 2.9. Looking for to this small but delightful fix.

GravityForms Launches Demo Site

@matt mcinvale – A lot of people have been asking that question which is why I think at some point, there will be a FAQ or a special place on the GravityForms website which will explain why it’s better although the features page and my 11 minute video do a good job I think.

Which Theme Company Has The Best Word Of Mouth?

@Basilakis – If you really want to see the poll results, go here http://www.wptavern.com/poll-archive and find the corresponding poll. You can’t miss it!

» Posted By Jeffro On September 19, 2009 @ 5:57 PM

As I mentioned on the latest episode of WordPress Weekly, my goal was to get a feel for the theme company that people were hearing the most about. Unfortunately, WooThemes sort of ruined the poll as I was unable to keep it to just the community doing the voting. So, I’ve since removed the poll results but the post and comments will remain.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 9, 2009 @ 12:06 PM

@donnacha | WordSkill – While I agree that the poll was going well before folks started passing links around to vote for them, this could easily be turned around so that theme authors listed or not listed could use their marketing skills to get people here to vote for them or put a good word in for them which would really be a good test of how well their marketing is.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 2:35 PM

Hey, I could have added all sorts of theme companies to the list but then I’d be faced with a mile long poll. Using hindsight, I should have used PollDaddy to just ask one question and provide an open field for users to tell me their answer instead of choosing from a list. Pretty cool to see the discussions taking place here on why you’ve chosen one over the other.

@Benjamin – I have no idea why WP-Polls lists anyone at a negative percentage. It did this with a different poll I ran as well. Could be a bug. Guess I should notify Lester and see if he knows about it.

Andy Peatling Part Deux

@JamieO – you might be the first person to ever use an unordered list in my comments form lol. I’ll look into it to see how easy it is to add a style for that. Your questions have been jotted down

HookPress – Seems Like A Great Idea

I think what I need to do is look more into the concept of Webhooks itself and then come back and review the plugin/idea as then I’ll have a better understanding of how useful this could be. Keep up the great work on the YARPP plugin!

WordCamp Hitting The Big Apple

Learned today that Sivel and I will both be crashing at Brads place during the event. This should be fun.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 10, 2009 @ 7:26 PM

@Darren Hoyt – I don’t do karaoke but Aaron Brazell I’m sure would be all over that.

@Andrea_R – Hmm, so I’ll finally figure out who the WPMU Guru actually is.

» Posted By Jeffro On September 3, 2009 @ 2:02 AM

@Andrea_R – Hey that will be pretty cool to meet up with the uber husband and wife WPMU team :)

@Brad – LOL When I get there Brad, I will secretly turn on my recorder and ask questions related to the PHPBB bridge!

@Miroslav Glavic – Sounds like a good dinner. But I’m sure BBQ will be around somewhere.

iThemes Responds To Speculation – All Is Well

@Cory Miller – Well, it’s not as if we were demonizing IThemes or anything, just public chatter regarding the company but as co founder, you did the right thing in noticing the chatter and addressing it face first before it became anything more. And hey, no better way to hear it than from the horses mouth :)

@Chris Jean – Well, in this day in age, if no one sees any public activity on a company blog or in various other circles for about 2 weeks, people start thinking the company/service is dead. Weird, but that is how it is. Until proven otherwise, speculation about the death of the company ensues and only continues to grow and get wilder. Of course, if there is nothing wrong with the company, the longer they keep silent the worst the chatter becomes.

@Nathan – Do you have any further information to backup this opinion? In the past two years of being involved in the WordPress community, I’ve seen nothing to indicate this to be true of iThemes.

Who Needs eBay When You Have WP Auctions?

So today, I’ve gone through the random number picker between 1-7 which is the total number of unique comments published on this post. Comment number 4 which is Danny G Smith was chosen. What I did was close my eyes and just clicked the Get Random button a bunch of times. Congratulations Danny, Hyder will be in touch with you to get you a copy of the plugin and thanks to everyone who commented on the review. I hope you all found it helpful in some way.

Have You Enjoyed Your Stay At The Tavern So Far?

@dg – I tell ya, comments like yours are rejuvenating. If WPTavern had a mantra, I’m pretty sure your comment would be it.

@Jean-Baptiste Jung – Just glad to have you around Jean despite you not being a member of this particular community for a long time. You’ve definitely provided quite a bit to the overall WordPress community between CatsWhoCode and WPRecipes.

@JLeuze – Well, I could take the credit for that but then I’d be in trouble. So I’d like to thank Kim and Kit for helping to keep things in order around the Tavern. I try to include coverage of anything I see interesting whether it be WordPress or an Automattic owned service. Thanks for the kind words.

@matt mcinvale – Free as in GPL? :)

@Paul – Heh. Thanks. No offense taken.

@Laura Kalbag – Yeah, Ozh’s little banner ad made my entire week! Thanks for sticking around Laura.

@Kyle Eslick – So whenever anyone asks me how this got started, I’ll be mentioning your name for eternity :P Thanks again for giving me a sweet deal on the domain, I’m pretty sure I’ve put it to good use.

@Darren Hoyt – Pleasure to have you around Darren, and I love it when people publish their ideas in the forum. Always like seeing people come up with something innovative, even if it’s from left field. Hoping the feedback the surrounding community provides helps turn the project into a success.

@Epic Alex – Well, I can’t take any credit for that. The reason you get great replies is because of all the other smart WordPress people that have decided to participate on the forum. I have them to thank for answering the tough questions.

@Brad Potter – Man, it must suck to come to the Tavern during the day and not see anything new published on the blog or on the forum lol. Because of you, I have to try and amp up my consistency so I can satisfy your appetite every day. And of course, if I need to know about a new theme, I know who to ask!
