Interesting Take From A Female Developer

Stereotypes prevail. Many years ago I was surprised to get an interview at Western Electric for a marketing position – I quickly realized they should have been looking at a master’s degree candidate instead of someone just out of college. I noticed many Italian names on the doors as I walked down the hallway to the interview area. The man interviewing me was Italian as well. Hmm? What is going on here?

At a certain point in the interview he asked me if I did a lot of Italian cooking and do I know how to make a good cannoli. Er, what? No.

Idiot.

We need to get past this judging thing that is so prevalent in our society. Ted is right, ssh!

WordPress Foundation To Foot The Bill For Meetup.com Organizer Dues

I filled out the survey and hope that I am considered to be a possible Meetup.com WordPress organizer. I was considering having my own meetup group for the last two months and ended up helping another marketing group instead because their meetup organizer was pretty burned out. It takes a lot of time and effort to keep these groups going.

I have no problem working with the folks at WordPress and they have every right to ensure their brand is being used correctly and with the right “esprit de corps”. In the past all of our marketing meetings with “WordPress” in the title received major attendance.

There is great need for sharing tips, strategies, practices and ideas concerning WordPress. Rules are needed to make sure we are all on the same page.

Our community needs this type of group. – Jan

From Six Figures To Ten Bucks

Well some people still use terms like coders and programmers. I used the word programmer in a group of what I would consider “code geeks” and there was an audible “gasp” – everyone wants to be known as a designer. Ok, fine. but in my mind you have lumped yourself with graphic designers that make WordPress sites too and that takes away from your skills. I guess each generation has their words to define who and what they are.

Like Kurt says, when the model changes, there is opportunity. As we all sort out our positions in this industry the winner will surely be the small business owner because now they will have reasonable choices – and hopefully with WordPress they gain control back over their own site.
