Making 80K Through One Plugin

He’s made some good points about giving away a free version on wp.org, we do the same with WP Auctions and it’s helped us grow…quite a bit. I’ve learned a few tips from him as well which I’ll implement soon enough.

Yoast On Why Some Themes Hurt Your SEO

@Joost de Valk – Yes, clearly you’ve put a lot of work behind your SEO plugin, I use it myself, I personally think you could’ve used more tact here.

Your post also helps you “sell” your services by showing how you saved a blog, albeit at the expense of pointing out someone else by linking to the blog in question. The theme author himself responded on your blog too.

From Joost’s post on his blog: “I’ve since emailed the theme authors and they’re taking action to fix it, so there’s no reason for me to name them here, …”

Really? By linking to the blog in question you actually very clearly named them. “View source” is not exactly rocket science and the type of people that read your blog know exactly how to do that.

Thanks for making other authors aware though of this sort of issue though. I generally tend to leave SEO to plugins and code my themes with the proper heading tags and do as much as possible to make the code lightweight. So far it’s worked out fine.

Some Orgnizations And WordPress Just Don’t Mix

@Ted Clayton – Thanks for the info.

I guess Jeff summed it up in the post title quite eloquently, some organizations and WordPress just don’t mix.

Never heard of KevinJohn before, and I really don’t know why all the ruckus over one guy’s post?

He does know he could’ve written all those 15 points as plugins and showed all of us a thing or two? Anyway…sad to see you go bud. Take care.

Interview With Paul Mycroft On The Erosion Of His Web Design Business

I’ve seen my custom client business literally disappear as well. Even those that do attempt to contact stop once they’ve searched around a bit more. Getting clients used to be easier around 12 months ago, but now the industry has literally shifted to the theme marketplaces and there is no end in sight.

This just means that we, as an industry, need to adapt to the local mom and pop setups that would not mind spending $1k – $5k+ back then but now think $50 is what web design costs.

The downside is that some people contact you and actually expect $50 – $100 prices for custom jobs!?! Seriously.

The upside is that you get to build once and re-sell many times more. Which has proved to be quite profitable for a lot of people.

I still miss the days of creating unique designs for clients though, it used to be quite the rush!

Would You Take WordPress Advice From A Non WordPress Using Site?

WordPress.org itself does not run on WordPress…if I’m not mistaken.

Senior Front End WordPress Developer Wanted

You know Jeff, it would be an awesome idea for you to start a job board for WordPress related work on your site. I’m sure employers/businesses/web companies would love to market to the right demographic for this type of stuff.

Could definitely help you pay some bills too! Let me know if you need help with the design and development of it :-)

Writing Zen In WordPress

I always felt a “distraction free” product is for people who just can’t keep it together to focus.

That’s just my opinion.

Is Gravatar Slowing You Down?

I actually disabled Gravatar after reading this post and my page load decreased from over 20 seconds to under 5 seconds for some of my most popular posts. So yeah, don’t think I’ll be turning it anytime soon.

Help Me Create A Case Study Template

- If you’re interviewing a company, how do they go about setting up collaboration between different departments.
- If you’re interviewing an individual “do-it-all” type company (like me ;-) ), about their process of getting a client on WordPress if it’s their first time or porting old content over to a new theme.
- The basic design process they take, what questions do they ask their clients.

And what @Ozh said above.

How Low Is Too Low?

@Regina

that’s one of the reasons I’m in this business.

Very true. Trouble is most people, i.e the ones who have no idea about FTP/HTML/plugin upgrading (OMG, do I click it…and then what?) expect you to help them for free. Since WordPress is free they expect your time to be as well.

If I could charge a quarter for every email I’ve sent for free support I would have a truck load of quarters.

Conversation With Matt Martz

While I understand where Matt is coming from, i.e to stick with the spirit of open source, he also has to see that even though WordPress.org is free they do charge for some select options on WordPress.com and a heck of a lot more on their VIP service. I believe this helps them stick with the spirit, for that warm fuzzy feeling as well as a warm healthy meal.

It can be a challenge to go down that route though, as the majority of people will expect it for free.

Matt, you could have easily channeled your resources into one or two major plugins and offered upgrades for a fee. There are many people who appreciate extra features and support that way. We’ve been moderately successful with this (for the amount of time we spend on it) and I believe someone of your caliber can be as well.

Security This, Security That

First of all WordPress is a blogging platform, yes we’ve forked it to do so many things, but that’s what it is inherently.

We’re in version 2.8.4, by now people using WordPress should have realized that things like this can happen and when they do it’s a serious issue. So if you’re customizing it to perform all kinds of “thingamajigs” you better be prepared to deal with re-doing those “thingamajigs” when it comes time to upgrade.

WordPress provides you the tools to do whatever. But if you use it in such a way that your entire website/blog has to DREAD an upgrade, well then, you’re doing it wrong.

Who Needs eBay When You Have WP Auctions?

@Enoch Woodhouse – Sorry Enoch, it has to be used on a self hosted WordPress blog.

However, we are working on a solution where everyone can use it. Should be releasing it soon. Stay subscribed to WP Tavern for the news.

@Jeff – We’ll give you an exclusive if you want it ;-)

» Posted By Hyder On September 1, 2009 @ 5:33 AM

@Benjamin – The “Buy it now” function does not disappear once a bid has been placed. However, if you set a “Buy it now” price and the bidding goes above then you may let the bid price go up and disable the buy it now price from the backend of your blog.

There is also the option to set only a “buy it now” price without having it go to auction bidding at all.

GPL Commercial Theme Page Now On The Repository

That’s a great move my Matt and very well done too.

Going to send in my name for the list as well.

How To Screw Up Your Image

So now if anyone creates a theme that has a 300 pixel right side banner/photo/video and a left sided content area, Georgia as the main font, using ems and in black and white can get sued by these dimwits {yes, I said it}.

Oh wait, they have an option to have a left sidebar too!

This is just a classic case of capitalist wrangling, it’s nowhere even close to being about GPL.
