Displaying 1 To 21 Of 21 Comments Using WPTavern To Share Your Knowledge With The World Can’t wait for the launch of the new site – I’ve been missing the WPTavern perspective although I may confess to still being biased towards posts authored by Jeffro :) I am particularly in favour as there will be no ads gracing the site. p/s: I’d almost forgotten that the Tavern is currently under new management… » Posted By Flick On May 14, 2013 @ 9:33 AM New Company Releases Evil WordPress Plugin Would users be able to tell that such a plugin was being used when registering? :) » Posted By Flick On May 9, 2013 @ 3:39 PM Matt Mullenweg To Be In Charge Of The 2012 Default Theme Love Twenty Ten… not quite as in love with Twenty Eleven. Am hoping 2012 will be a brilliant change ;) » Posted By Flick On December 21, 2011 @ 6:35 PM Small Potato /Tung Do Gets Second Chance With DevPress This is an interesting development! I agree its a pity that they have had part ways since DevPress is a culmination of 4 brilliant minds. I’m sure it is only a temporary thing in that they will work together again in the future on other projects even if its only 2 of them. Their ideas converged to form DevPress and will no doubt converge again! » Posted By Flick On December 14, 2011 @ 11:40 AM Feature Filled Comment Administration Where’s my ‘Like’ button so I can like this feature? :) » Posted By Flick On December 2, 2011 @ 11:55 AM Glad they’re finally discussing it! :) I have been using a plugin to save all my widget settings thus far, but to have it as core would be really useful, and I really like your ‘revisions’ idea, so I have also voted for ‘Other – Revision’ as well. » Posted By Flick On November 22, 2011 @ 7:06 PM WordPress Has A Smaller Community Than Either Drupal Or Joomla Just wanted to say that I’ve asked questions on WordPress StackExchange before, and you get some really helpful and knowledgeable peeps on there. I don’t think I really considered asking the same questions on the WP forums, mainly because its quite hard to find answers to questions sometimes compared to the WP SE system, which is able to suggest very relevant content due to the (better?) tagging and search system? » Posted By Flick On September 26, 2011 @ 1:30 PM First Patch Into WordPress By Coen Jacobs Surely that was not your first patch, Ryan? :) And congrats to Coen! » Posted By Flick On September 26, 2011 @ 1:31 PM Pods Plugin Successfully Kickstarted To Version 2.0 A friend is also using Kickstarter to raise funds and I’m glad to say she has also managed to exceed her target amount via the website, so its very encouraging to read another success story – esp. a WordPress related one – as it will certainly raise awareness and hopefully it will inspire other plugin developers to try this route too instead of e.g. going commercial. The Pods plugin does have a very strong community following, so am not sure if that was a major factor in achieving its target and more, as it was able to propagate the news quickly. Perhaps upcoming developers without such a strong community backing can contact Jeff in the future to help raise their profile if they decide to go down the Kickstarter route :) » Posted By Flick On September 16, 2011 @ 2:18 PM Flexible Widgets – Only Works For Certain Widgets I had to stick with the Firefox 2 series on my 7 year old laptop because the later versions of Firefox were just to CPU/memory-heavy for me to use for an extended period of time (I kept having to shut it down) and I also agree with Jeff that some add-ons were just never developed for later versions. Am now using a 4 year old laptop so I don’t have this issue anymore. » Posted By Flick On September 16, 2011 @ 2:30 PM See If You’re Secure With The Timthumb Vulnerability Scanner I found that the CPanel Filemanager search was a very useful way of finding the files as well. » Posted By Flick On September 5, 2011 @ 6:59 PM What’s The Best Way To Be Notified Of Theme And Plugin Updates? That’s one great thing about child themes I suppose – it makes theme updates less painful. I was wondering though: is WP going to introduce a Changelog system for themes as well – like they have done with plugins (as championed by Jeff way back when?) because not every theme author maintains a separate website with a changelog. Not knowing if this is possible, but perhaps one way of ensuring that people will upgrade (without doing it automatically) is to have a ‘revert’ button along with the ‘upgrade’ button? But conditionally in that if its a security update, then no revert button is shown. But if its a more ‘optional’ upgrade, then it will. And this setting can be determined by theme or plugin authors? » Posted By Flick On September 5, 2011 @ 7:08 PM Feedback Needed For New Widget Context User Interface @Jeffro – I agree :) Perhaps one way of mixing the two would be to have this lovely interface (I’ve just tested it again!) that also accepts standard template tags? Perhaps as part of the ‘Advanced’ tab that you’ve mentioned in your post? » Posted By Flick On September 7, 2011 @ 10:50 AM Like Jeff, whilst I am a fan of Kaspar’s work, I have ended up using Widget Logic alot more than Widget Context simply because it’s easier to define the display of certain widgets using the standard WP template tags just by copying and pasting from a Notepad document, rather than having to configure several different lines. The new interface looks interesting though. Perhaps one function that can be introduced in the future is the ability to copy settings across from one widget to another, since sometimes several widgets have the same display criteria. » Posted By Flick On September 2, 2011 @ 12:36 PM I am really glad you managed to sort something out that resulted in the best outcome, for yourself and for us, so welcome back and great job on the negotiations! Am looking forward to reading your posts as usual and was wondering if there was any chance of setting up an email subscription plugin so we can receive updates via email? p/s: One must thank your anonymous buyer for knowing that WPTavern is a unique resource in the WP world that is too good to be left aside. Thanks AB! » Posted By Flick On June 8, 2011 @ 6:00 PM Hi Jeff I just wanted to wish you all the best with your future endeavours. All good things must come to an end or at least be on pause for a while, especially when other commitments become more important, but like the others have already said, your contribution to the WordPress community both online and offline will not be forgotten. As a fellow ‘user’ who loves WordPress but never committed the time and effort to discovering it and the community the way you have done, I have always thought that your dedication was a true inspiration and a gold standard of how WP enthusiasts should be. I know it sounds really cheesy (or corny in the US?) but hand-on-heart, whenever I reflected on my piddly attempts at being a true WP enthusiast, I always measured what I had done compared to what you had achieved and therefore always knew I could and should do more. Hopefully your hiatus away from the community will not be for very long but only when you are ready; the college route sounds great and I can tell you that some plumbers in the UK, for instance, are reputed to earn similar salaries to solicitors and other so called ‘professionals’ and that people have given up other career paths to retrain as one. Whatever happens: good luck and we’ll be cheering for you :) » Posted By Flick On May 18, 2011 @ 2:43 PM Woo To Power Menu Management In WP 3.0 This is some really brilliant menu system! As soon as I heard mjepson (?) say ‘you can add your own link’ – I went WOO! :) Truly an exciting development. A big thank you to the developers of course, and to Jeff for keeping up posted! » Posted By Flick On February 11, 2010 @ 5:40 PM What WordPress Needs From Its New Community Leader Just saw this for the first time: Andrew is hits the nail on the head as usual! » Posted By Flick On January 31, 2009 @ 7:48 PM WordPress Needs To Revise Post Revisions @John Kolbert – Sorry about my late reply, and thanks for taking the time to actually write back :) » Posted By Flick On January 31, 2009 @ 7:51 PM @John Kolbert – Thanks John Kolbert! I’ll definitely be using ’2′ as my guideline. Just out of interest… this does work retrospectively?? In the sense that if I add it on now, WordPress will automatically remove the previous revisions, leaving just 2? p/s: Sorry about the newbie question but I just wanted to make sure :) » Posted By Flick On January 24, 2009 @ 1:06 PM I am really glad to see this post generate so much comment! It seems to be a good time to start looking into improving Post Revision and its implementation. I like the feature itself, but am not fond of the fact that it’s not even an option that can be controlled in the admin panel. Since it is now a core function, it would make sense that managing the different versions should be built within the core WP rather than relying on the excellent 3rd party plugins developed so far. Some people have already suggested that the functionality of Post Revisions may be better provided by a plugin rather than within core. Hopefully some of the WordPress developers can re-consider the current position please? » Posted By Flick On January 23, 2009 @ 10:55 PMComments Posted By Flick
