A VaultPress Everyone Can Afford

I had hoped it would include more. It is a still a good deal for people new to WP or people who have just migrated from WP.com.
For me, this is not worth the monthly fees as we can backup via our server on a per account basis and store them for 30 days. We also have daily database backups which are emailed to our gmail account where they can be stored until the account is full, then the oldest are deleted.
This allows us to rollback changes per account or even access the files and db from the server backup (stored on a separate HDD) and rollback the changes. We backup the db and email it so that even if our server completely dies and both HDDs fail, we can still restore the website using just the db backup. While this will not restore items such as images, we can retrieve these from our CDN or from other locations.
Although this vaultpress is not for me, I do see that it would be ideal for many, many smaller websites. However, they should also look at getting a better host so that it is more secure and is attacked less.
It still astonishes me that there are hosts using 32bit hardware and php4!

New Company Releases Evil WordPress Plugin

Baffling.

Is this plugin ‘trolling’? How bored must you have to get to be motivated to build something as pointless as this?

VaultPress – Not An Option For Non-Profit MultiSite Installations?

I’ve paid VaultPress $40/month since nearly the beginning. I’d surely like to pay less and have a hard time recommending them to most casual bloggers or multisites due to the expense. Been thinking of replacing them with BackupBuddy (one time $75 fee) for backups and Securi ($90/yr) to monitor site security. Jeremy’s pedigree is rock solid and his latest venture sounds intriguing, but it’s too new for my comfort level.

One Way To Make WordPress Less Portable

Otto – would you be so kind as to point us “naive” folks toward the better ways.

Is there a way to monitor for serialized data? Is it defined within the table structure? Are there common serialize/deserialize functions used in the WordPress world?

DreamHost Resets All FTP/Shell/VPS Account Passwords

I suppose DreamHost *could* have remained silent about this intrusion, and just let us, the customers taker the heat when the intruders took over our websites & our lives. And while nobody is happy that there was a break-in, I think that they dealt with the best way they could. They’ve certainly been forthcoming and transparent about the whole affair, which garners them some credit in my book. DH has treated me well for several years now, so I’m willing to cut them some slack when they took the hard way to protect me & my sites. I’m sure forcing a ftp password rest was not an easy decision, knowing the hue & cry it would cause, but it was the right thing to do.

And yes, it totally affected me, I host 30 or 40 some domains under my DH acct. So I had a lot of passwords to reset, and a lot of people to inform. But still, it could have happened at any webhost, not matter how expensive or unfriendly.

Please Don’t Use The Post Title As A Hyperlink

I agree with the post. Having titles that behave in two different ways in the same RSS feed makes for terrible usability. My suggestion would be: imitate Asides in many themes and don’t use the title field at all, but place the link in the body of the post, styled for emphasis.

The WordPress Learning Curve – How Steep Or Shallow Is It?

I came to WordPress from Blogger in 2006; my geek cousin helped me move and set up the site (and hosted it for a while on his own server). Honestly, I was so excited by the new functionality (Categories! Static pages!), learning my way around was pure excitement. And the original version of Blogger had taught me enough about HTML and CSS that I wasn’t intimidated by having to hack up those great, WP1.5-era themes. So I’ve always had a hard time understanding people who try WordPress.com, give up after an hour or two and go fleeing back to Blogger. WTF is their problem?! Everything is so much easier now… but it was never hard.

WordPress.com To Self Hosted For 99 Bucks

I tend to think that anyone who needs help migrating should really stay put.

Have You Removed Or Disabled The Admin Bar?

I disabled it because I already have little enough screen real estate — due in part to a full bookmarks bar in my regular browser, with links to the back ends of all my sites. (Doesn’t everyone do that?)

Software Releases And The Kitchen Sink

I thought maybe Matt was trying to send a message to Drupal, or lord knows to the Habari community. Not sure why he’d want to goad them into action, but it seems like a message they could stand to hear.

However, as a user, and a lazy and easily satisfied one at that, I’d be happy if WordPress never had another major update. I realize that’s not the way the world works, but really, it’s fine, guys. Don’t make it so complicated that yahoos like me can’t even figure out how to hack up a theme anymore. I kind of miss those 2.0 days…

Lots Of News From WordCamp San Francisco

Thanks for the update.

I am very interested in hearing more about :
Dave Moyer of the WordCast Podcast blew the roof off the house with his presentation regarding using WordPress to Podcast.

Hopefully there is a writeup of this, or it will be on wordpress tv soon.

Too Much RSS Noise? Get An Email Daily Digest

There is no such thing as too much good content.

However, I can understand the concept of ‘digest’ type aggregations – some people like to keep lists (inboxes, or feed lists, etc.) clean, or reduced to a summary type level.

I think it is more an organization thing.

Review Of Front End Editor Plugin

I think this plugin is great, as it gives an option for quick editing.

While I do agree with some of Andrew’s comments (about sloppy practices), I also think this will be a very useful tool.

While I won’t use it for composing and posting entries, it will be handy for necessary edits or changes.

Configuring Contact Form 7

I have loaded Contact Form 7 on a number of sites. All used to work well.

Recently, ALL of the forms stopped working on all sites. When the “Send” button is clicked, the little arrows revolve, but nothing happens. No mail is sent and the process doesn’t end.

From other forums, this looks like a common problem, but there is no solution being proposed.

Any ideas why this should be happening?

Interview With Andrew Ozz (Mr. Visual Editor)

I always enjoy reading well explained reasons why things are the way they are. As a developer I do keep non-developers in mind when I plan and assemble, of course I do or my work would be terrible, but phrasing my own decisions to those non-developers is a feat greater than programming, for me.

Andrew’s comments were interesting, and I applaud his reminder around browser capabilities. Also, the power user/quirks situation is one I still battle with, I’ve found myself resorting to inserting a Duck in order to ‘get away’ with a new feature, or plant an Egg to reward curiosity (or mishap).

Andy S – I found your comments interesting too, particularly your description of the Editors state, not to mention your category for the ‘expectation fault’.

Edit: Yes! I do want to use the same kick ass comment editor on my site!
