WPWeekly Episode 94 – Commercial Themes

Jeff and Jake, I think I can speak for the themers on the call and say we enjoyed sharing our passion for WordPress, themes and our communities.

We live and breath this. We’ve built our entire lives and those on our teams around WordPress. And it’s been a blast for me personally.

It has its up and downs like everything else, but overall, it’s such a fun time as the popularity of WP continues to spread.

Thanks for the opportunity!

Automattic Launches VaultPress – No BackupBuddy Killer

Jeff, thanks for this …. we’re definitely not discouraged. After two years of being in the theme business and seeing one after another competitor launch almost daily, we’re used to it. :)

Ultimately, we know competition is good for business … it keeps us sharp and innovative FOR our community — those who choice to spend their hard-earned money supporting us and allowing us to continue to release great WP projects.

Many people have asked how we’ll respond and my answer is always this: We’re going to keep doing what we do … innovating and support our community.

I also think people want choices. They want control. If only VaultPress or [insert any new backup solution] existed, people would still want another solution. And vice versa.

Backup Buddy Is A Home Run

@Brian -exactly! Although we think the backup part hits ALL of WordPress … the migration part is a HIUGE need. As a developer myself I frequently would build clients sites on my sandbox and then try to migrate them over … tedious. Moving one job pays for this plugin.

@donnacha | WordSkill – Again, I appreciate it … I took it as positive feedback to improve. :)

BTW – check out our file versions page … Essence is in version 3 right now. Email me (cory at ithemes dot com) and I’ll get you the latest if you don’t have it.

@donnacha | WordSkill – I appreciate this feedback. It proves something that many in our team have realized and I’m finally getting it — that we (meaning me) have not done a good job of engaging our customers and letting them know what’s going on with our company.

Call it whatever you want, but I know and accept responsibility for having not done a good job of engaging our customers. I’ve let our theme releases do that. We’ve had our share of struggles, but we’re fully committed to getting back out there and speaking with people.

Benjamin mentioned this with our first Live Event, where we’re hoping to meet our customers face-to-face and provide training and value … http://ithemes.com/ithemes-wordpress-theme-bootcamp-jan-29-30-in-dallas/

I’m super excited about this and our upcoming training at WebDesign.com as well as we’ve been hard at work building the training people have consistently asked for the last 2 years.

But I take for granted that our team knows what’s going on, and the outside world does not.

Admittedly, I also have preferred a more low key persona online. I have not participated in some of the discussions (or fights), preferring to keep my opinions to myself and our team.

But I still believe our work should speak for itself. And if you’re not convinced after the release of Builder of that work and innovation and commitment, then I’m going to be super surprised but also humbly respect your opinion.

Consistently, we’ve tweaked older themes and made them better — giving our customers MUCH more than they originally bought. Essence was our first theme … but it’s been SIGNIFICANTLY improved since it was released in Jan. 2008 (featured images, menu builder, etc did not exist when we released).

All that to say … I invite you to email me with any questions. I particularly appreciate (and prefer) constructive feedback like this … that flavor inspires me to get better, do better!

@Amit – Sorry, but there’s simply no comparison to WPRemix with our Builder Theme …. and that’s no offense to Remix, but you had to edit page templates. Builder eliminates that need for file editing.

Jeff, thanks for the feedback on our next blockbuster theme.

I voted “Are you crazy?” :)

This theme has literally been “in the works” since April when Chris talked about doing away with typical WP page templates and started working on the layout engine that powers Builder.

We’re super excited to finally release (hopefully in the next 2 weeks) because my personal experience with WordPress and the emphasis we’ve put into WP themes at iThemes has been using WordPress as a CMS and building websites (not just blogs) with WordPress.

I think Builder turns WordPress into web design software in a way. It puts the power of layout design into the users’ hands. And to me, that is indeed powerful.

We think Builder “extends” WordPress … and after it’s released, we’ll start working on Builder additional elements (widgets, plugins, child themes, etc) that extend Builder even further as we’ve done with Flexx. (Flexx has got a lot more stuff than we initially released it in November of last year, which you might remember, Jeff.)

As John and others said, you’ll still need great design. And that’s a point I hope to emphasize … this is a POWERHOUSE ‘web design with WordPress’ theme for typical graphic designers (like our James Dalman) and it should them to unleash their awesome design skills and put more time into graphics and CSS tweaks — with MINIMAL coding!

iThemes Responds To Speculation – All Is Well

@Benjamin – coming from a customer and unbaited! Thanks for this. You’ve hit the exact target we’ve been focusing on since we started in January 2008, with our first business theme Essence. Rock on!

Nathan and Peter, I gotta say … I think in the spirit of transparency you should have left site links and not hide under anonymity with these types of comments if you really believe in your comments and want open and honest replies.

I’ve never been one to really appreciate controversy within these types of discussions and would rather interact with people one-on-one instead of starting a flame war in the comments section of a blog post.

So with that, I’ll just let our actions (plans, and products) do the talking for us. And in the future, maybe we can change your minds about iThemes. :)

Jeff, I appreciate this post … and also even caring enough to ask if everything is well at iThemes.

I have to admit …. business is a roller coaster ride and we’re not immune to the ups and downs of building a business. But it’s been great as I look back on almost two years at iThemes and beyond that with just WordPress and theme design personally.

It’s definitely a challenge …. it seems like everyday a new “premium” theme is released — for better or worse. We’re taking the long view of things though and working hard to build a company that will be around for the long haul.

Cheers to WordPress for making it all possible!!!
