WordPress News Sites And The Bermuda Triangle

I think the key point you make is about code, not “news.” I think, ultimately, a successful WordPress-centric “blog” should focus on teaching WordPress, not just linking to everything WordPress-related or writing about the latest hire at Automattic. I think the value comes in the lessons you teach people and that’s what will ultimately build value for a successful niche WordPress site. Without this, your content’s value rapidly expires. The WordPress development community as a whole can easily keep up with WP-related releases through the twittersphere, as you said.

WordPress Foundation Harming Rather Than Helping WordCamps

@Jeffro – That’s correct. WordCamp Central is the governing body of WordCamps. Ultimately, WordCamp Central reports to the WordPress Foundation anyway. Any revenue from WordCamp is required to be “donated” back to the Foundation, so its easy to get confused when you’re talking about who is ultimately responsible for WordCamp governance.

VaultPress – Not An Option For Non-Profit MultiSite Installations?

I’ve had much better results from free backup plugins like BackWPUp. VaultPress is still alpha at best.

Update On My Use Of Limit Login Attempts

A couple things I’d like to see make it into WordPress core would be user capability administration and some enhancements to login/registration security, like bot registration restriction and login attempt limitations. Those are things I think shouldn’t be left to plugins, in my opinion.

Do You Want To See Plugin Specific Dashboard Widgets Disappear?

I don’t see anything wrong with a Dashboard widget if the information is related to the plugin that created it. I know plenty of folks who want to stay updated. If it’s purely self-promotional, then yeah – nix it.

WordPress Foundation To Foot The Bill For Meetup.com Organizer Dues

I would have zero interest in handing over any amount of control of my Meetup group to the WordPress Foundation. It sounds nice in theory, but under the surface, it mainly looks like they’re trying to control these Meetups just like they control WordCamps.

How Commercial Plugin Developers Are Monetizing Through The Plugin Respository

I think the Freemium model is the way to go. Providing value in a free plugin is great for basic users of a plugin. For businesses and advanced users, it’s great to be able to purchase support and additional functionality required for more professional solutions.

WP-Snippets Launches Newly Designed Site

Kinda sad they copied the StumbleUpon website. Mostly because it’s horribly ugly.

My Experience In Running A WordPress Meetup

As the organizer for the St. Louis WP Meetup and primary organizer for WordCamp St. Louis 2011, I can tell you that starting a meetup was an absolutely awesome experience. Without it, I wouldn’t have met Chip Bennett, who is now helping out as an extremely knowledgeable support guru with UpThemes and I wouldn’t have been able to put together the very first WordCamp St. Louis without the volunteers from our Meetup group.

I have since moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth area and passed the torch to a local marketing/design agency and they’ve been running the Meetup successfully for months now. I have even gone back and visited the group and am proud to be able to say I was a part of that group.

I am considering starting another WordPress Meetup (even though Dallas has one of the largest Meetup groups ever assembled) for the North DFW area (Frisco, Plano, McKinney) so if anyone is local, give me a holler!

Experimental Method For Contributing To WordPress 3.4

I think this is the right approach, but I also think what you’ll end up seeing is the core devs becoming managers and there’s a reason why developers don’t like to cross that line.

Automattic Makes Second Investment – WPEngine

I think if it the cost scaled a little better with more reasonable traffic limits, WPEngine would be a no-brainer. I think Page.ly has been uber-successful because it comes with a pretty reasonable cost, even at the higher levels.

Please Don’t Use The Post Title As A Hyperlink

Would you post a link on twitter that goes to a page that holds a single link to another website? No. That’s why your argument doesn’t make sense. If you click a link then get distracted and come back later and don’t understand what that website was, that’s your fault for being easily distracted.
