GravityForms Launches To The Public

@epicalex RIght now the file upload is limited to files uploaded a part of the entry data. We don’t currently have a Post Image upload field. However, we are working on one and will be introducing a Post Image upload field with Version 1.1 of Gravity Forms.

This will allow a user to submit a form that creates a post and uploads an image that is then associated with that post as a gallery item in the media library.

You could then allow multiple photos to be uploaded by placing multiple photo uploads fields on your form. In the future we will implement the ability to upload multiple images from one field, but for now we are just working on getting the first iteration of the Post Image field up and running in the next release.

The demo is available here:

Thanks Jeff! I just wanted to point out that I am not actually the lead developer on Gravity Forms, I am part of the team but all the programming credit needs to go to Alex Cancado who is a brilliant programmer.

As for a demo… we are working on putting together a demo site that will enable users to try out the plugin and see how it works by logging in to a demo site.

I haven’t seen any lengthy reviews come out yet, but Joost de Valk did a quick blog post about the plugin here:

http://yoast.com/gravity-forms/

Joost is paying us a big compliment by using Gravity Forms on his own site and his development projects despite the fact he has his own plugin that also does contact forms. I don’t think another plugin developer could pay us a bigger compliment than that and we truly appreciate it.

Video Preview Of GravityForms

Just a quick note on Jeff’s screencast. The form on the frontend looked out of whack and centered because he turned off CSS output in the Settings page. So none of the necessary styles were being output to style the form on the frontend. If you turn off the CSS output you will need to put the necessary CSS in your theme’s stylesheet… otherwise it’s not going to get formatted correctly.

Themes At War

The themes aren’t just similar to StudioPress themes, both of the themes up for vote even feature the exact same video screenshot in the designs. Look at them and then look at this:

http://www.studiopress.com/demo/allure.html

The video is the exact same one. They lifted it, obviously they didn’t just randomly select the same video from YouTube, etc.

Which is fine, it’s all good as far as licensing concerns… gotta love the GPL. They aren’t doing anything wrong from that perspective.

BUT if you are going to have some of “Theme Wars” at least have good looking themes up to vote. Bland isn’t going to cut it, nor build excitement.

Ad Block Plus Not Needed Here

Ads don’t bother me. My browser blocks popups and pop unders.

Seeing ads on screen is the price I pay for reading free content.

The First Virtual WordCamp

I have no interest in attending a virtual WordCamp, and certainly not at that price.

For me the value in WordCamp is the networking, discussions and relationships that are built with firsthand interaction. You can’t recreate that in a virtual event.

The speakers and presenters are great, but to me they are just a bonus. I get more value out of everything else… meeting and talking to people, relationship building, and of course the after party :)

My WordCamp Chicago Experience

Had a great time hanging out with you also Jeff, fun times.

And you were a little off on your tab. I believe the steak alone was $44 with no side items. Your total bill came to $69 for a steak, 2 potato skins and tax and tip. And that didn’t include a drink as Kevin bought everyone a round.

Time to eat at home for a while… or at least when I get back from my vacation in Mexico :)

Matt Takes Notice Of Gorilla Project

I’ve mentioned this before on other sites, but they seriously need to rethink their name.

There is already an established premium themes company using “Gorilla” in their name… Gorilla Themes.

If they had researched their name when coming up with a domain, a quick search on Google for “gorilla wordpress” or “gorilla themes” would have returned them as the first result. They certainly didn’t do their research.

I don’t find it very kosher to use a name that can cause brand confusion with someone in the same space… especially when you are giving something away for free and the other person has a pay product. It causes confusion AND can impact each others SEO due to both using Gorilla in the name.

Plugin Style Settings – Database Or CSS?

I favor a hybrid approach.

Provide for color changes and styling within the plugin administration, storing the values in the database. Make this the default functionality. Then also provide the necessary CSS information so if a user wants to write his own CSS they can, and they can add this to their themes CSS.

If a user chooses to manage his own CSS he can tell the plugin not to output the database driven styles.

This approach satisfies the power users and developers as well as the novices who need a simple solution.

I’m not a big fan of the plugin itself having it’s own static CSS file(s). Get to be too much to manage if a bunch of your plugins all have their own CSS files to juggle.
