Joomla Marries WordPress?

Jom Comment
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/contacts-&-feedback/articles-comments/676/details

I would turn it around and ask “surely WordPress can’t be THAT bad as a CMS”?

Since WordPress started as a blogging solution, its obviously better suited for it. Likewise Joomla has CMS features built-in to its core that would require multiple 3rd party plugins to accomplish the same functionality in WordPress. Also I find far more sophisticated 3rd party add-ons and themes available for Joomla.

That said, I love WordPress and look forward to seeing it adopt more CMS type capabilities into its core.

If your an end user it’s understandable you would want to limit yourself to one platform that suites you best. It’s definitely much less hassle.

As someone who occasionally provides services to others, I find it beneficial to learn and use both. For example, the same company recently paid me to setup a WordPress blog and a separate Joomla site. I find it difficult to turn down money :-)

LOL – Is that a hint?

Actually I like both solutions and don’t necessarily think it has to always be one pitted against the other. I disliked Joomla at first because it couldn’t do certain things that WordPress can. As I dug deeper into WordPress I soon learned that it too has some problematic limitations. Rumor has it the summer may bring some long awaited changes to existing Joomla deficiencies.

Not related to comments but here is one example of how Joomla devs are creating really advanced solutions.

Seems to have some SquareSpace type features and will make use of “Themelets” which you can preview at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/prothemer/sets/72157617561900958/

On the other hand if your project is heavily dependent on CMS type functionality, Joomla begins to look better considering the features built-in to it’s core. There also seem to be more advanced, feature rich themes available in the Joomla community. I wonder why that is?

I’m not knowledgeable of it but have you seen the GPL RokIntenseDebate plugin? It was created by RocketWerx (RocketTheme)
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/rocketwerx/
“Two simple plugins that make adding IntenseDebate comments to your articles extremely simple. RokIntenseDebate consists of a content plugin, and an editor button plugin. All you do is write your article, then click the button to enable IntenseDebate comments at the end of your article. Only setup is to enter your IntenseDebate account number in the content plugin before using”

How To Screw Up Your Image

If you are trying to protect valuable intellectual property, you have to police and enforce it otherwise you run the risk of it being diluted (Trademark 101). Perhaps Chris’ methods are a little over the top but if he believes he has valid intellectual property, he has no other choice.

Ah, GPL – The topic that never dies.

Jeff, next time you have Matt on your show, please ask him this simple and direct question for the record.

Matt, do you believe that the images and the style sheets of a WordPress theme fall under the GPL license or could they be licensed as separate works?

Saying Goodbye To Drupal And Hello To WordPress

In some ways I’ve come full circle.

I started out using Joomla and joined several Joomla Theme clubs. Later on, I became a WordPress user because of it ease of use, elegant admin and the great community. I invested many hours learning how WordPress works, learning basic theme development, experimenting with plug-ins, listening to WP podcasts, etc. I became a developer member of StudioPress (when it was Revolution 1), WooThemes and lately have purchased several Theme Forest themes among others.

I primarily use WordPress as a CMS and I tend to favor the magazine/news/portal type themes. After-all, these are the feature rich type of themes that put most premium theme authors on the map. As Jeff knows, I spend considerable time looking at and analyzing these type of themes looking for one that would build in many of the features I desire. I’m fully aware that many features can be accomplished with numerous plug-ins or custom code but then you face considerable support challenges when your dealing with so many different plug-in authors or developers who may cease development or be slow to upgrade their plug-ins.

Earlier this month I finally found the theme I’ve been looking for. There is only one catch, it’s a Joomla theme. At the end of April RocketTheme released what I think is the ultimate magazine/news theme. It has an incredible amount of features already built-in that you would typically find on a commercial quality news site. Weather, Stocks, News Ticker, News Pager, Featured Content, Advertising, Tabbed Modules, Incredible Typography, built-in source ordered SEO optimization, Ajax Search, Various Navigation Options, Built-in Module Highlights and on and on. The support that I receive from a single source is second to none. My questions are usually answered the same day and often times within the same hour. It literally is the best in the business.

And so, I have come full circle and back to Joomla development. It doesn’t mean I’m abandoning WordPress by any means. I have way too much time invested in WordPress, it possesses capabilities that Joomla doesn’t have and is the perfect solution for many projects.

I would like to put a challenge out there to WordPress developers who are cranking out magazine/news themes every other month. Take a long look at the May theme release from RocketTheme, see if you can step it up a notch and produce something similar. I’ll be your first customer. Until then, Joomla and RocketTheme will be my preferred solution for a sophisticated magazine/news/portal website.

Hey Jeff thanks for the nice write-up! We are really excited about our new support packages!

CorneliaMarie.com was a really fun site to work on (and a great show to watch!), although I’m not sure I could ever be a crab fisherman haha Makes me cold just thinking about it

Joomla Against Drupal Against WordPress

I get that the custom installer was the majority of custom code for WordPress, but remember Drupal has this feature (installer profiles) built in so my point is still valid.

I’m not sure about Joomla custom install scripts

» Posted By Brad On March 20, 2009 @ 10:02 AM

This is the most interesting stat to me:

Lines of custom PHP/JS code

Joomla! – 30
Drupal – 220
WordPress – 1,808

Kind of demonstrates how Drupal and Joomla can do a bit more from the web console than with custom code, but of course WordPress can do anything with the right amount of code. Expect to see that number for WordPress drop over the coming years as more features are added to WP…or maybe not if it is only blogging software? :P

What I Learned From WordCamp Denver

Excellent news about BuddyPress! While I love MU, getting BuddyPress to run on standard WordPress will really help it reach the masses.

I really enjoy working with BuddyPress and can’t wait to work with this release when it comes out!

I caught some of the video interviews done in Denver, really fun to watch Dave and Lorelle chat with attendees while we discussed at the Tavern haha!

Episode 42 – How Could WordPress Die?

Thanks for having me on Jeff, it was a fun episode! Great topic to talk about at the round table

» Posted By Brad On February 15, 2009 @ 12:09 AM

Six Ways In Which WordPress Could Die

Security is my number one fear and the same for most I think. WP did have an exploit that let a lot of websites get hacked. I have a few clients that were hit (before my services of course :P) and lost all of their data.

If WordPress suffers a larger hack that infects hundreds of thousands of websites I think most mainstream users will run horrified to another platform.

Another good reason to stay current on updates :)

Nice post Jeff, very thought provoking! Looking forward to the podcast tonight, should be frEAkY!

WordPress 2.7.1 Available To The Public

Yeah I checked 5 sites and only 1 had the upgrade notice. Guess the roll-out is somewhat scaled to help the server load I bet.

WordPress Tattoo Using The Wrong Logo?

I think it’s close enough that we shouldn’t be picky, the guy deserves props after all. Funny that Lorelle didn’t mention to the guy to have it triple checked to be correct before he did it.

Yeah looks like Ustream bit the big one this time. I use to live stream on that site a lot in early 2008 and it seemed pretty solid. We’ll see next Meetup I guess!

@Kel we should all get together sometime. I’d love to have a chat about WordPress CMS strategies with you
