Displaying 1 To 30 Of 88 Comments Interview With ManageWP Owner Vladimir Prelovac I;ve sent people to Manage WP when they explored multisite and found it too overwhelming for them. :) » Posted By Andrea_R On January 26, 2012 @ 2:15 PM Some Orgnizations And WordPress Just Don’t Mix @Ted Clayton -we cannot fix lack of common sense. ;) I have a multisite install with somewhere between 60-80 plugins. But they are not all on for every site and also not on a shared host. There is not magic number of plugins here – someone can put 10 crappy bloated plugins on their site and crash it. Or my fave if one seo plugin is good, 6 is better, right? Now we can reasonable expect people in Enterprise do not do this. And that’s what we’re talking about here. If there’s a few dozen eyeballs on al the code going through multiple checks, on the right hardware, then the actual number of plugins is really irrelevant if they are all needed for functionality. » Posted By Andrea_R On January 10, 2012 @ 1:21 PM @Ted Clayton – Part of the issue is that plugins are user submitted. Some, not all mind you, are from people who are JUST learning. Those I would not use in Enterprise. But you know, if I were a dev in enterprise, I would know how to code and I would either fix those plugins I needed or roll my own. For the original author’s needs, he has something highly specific and that requires a lot fo code, a lot of moving parts and hella hardware to boot. » Posted By Andrea_R On January 10, 2012 @ 11:56 AM Some of the items in his post simply are not true. “0 project managers” – that would be Jane. “They didn’t test the beta in IE” – also not true. The part for having a user moderate comments? Role Management plugin. There’s more plugin I can think of for pretty much every item he said was lacking. That’s kinda the point in WP – if it’s not in core (and if most people won;t use it, it does not need to be) then it’s a plugin. eh, if a software no longer meets your needs, there’s no need to hate on it. It is kinda sad to see all the enterprise-usage type people not help out n core and get involved with the direction. I was going to suggest an enterprise edition but that term evokes a lot of things counter to the general philosophy so what I mean by that is basically a plugin bundle to add on to WP and a manual for best practises in the enterprise. Seeing a LOT of supposedly enterprise people who know nothing abut have a dev install and pushing to production. (not necessarily this guy). » Posted By Andrea_R On January 10, 2012 @ 11:50 AM Plugin Created By A 10 Year Old Way to go Jesse! Keep at it. :) Tho it’s making my youngest look bad. She’s 11 and hasn’t coded anything for WordPress yet. Poor kid. :D » Posted By Andrea_R On January 2, 2012 @ 1:20 PM Cleaning Up The “Cannot Redeclare Mess” It’s really easy to spot on sites using child themes. They put the same code in all theme files, and because of the child/parent relationship, you get the “cannot redeclare” error – cuz the function is in there twice. ;) Note this is not a theme vulnerability, rather a server side one (or possibly plugins). Basically they find a way to be able to edit your files – no matter what files they are. » Posted By Andrea_R On November 29, 2011 @ 3:06 PM Upgrading And Backwards Compatibility For Plugins I really don’t even know why the question is being asked – should people still support WordPress 2.0 because some people use it? When would it end??? Stop coding in backwards compatibility. Otherwise there’s no point. » Posted By Andrea_R On November 28, 2011 @ 8:37 PM Automattic Makes Second Investment – WPEngine $50 a month is a common price for a VPS, even managed hosting. And they don’t know jack about WP either. So for someone to pay this, plus get WP help is a *good thing*. » Posted By Andrea_R On November 16, 2011 @ 6:38 PM VaultPress Now Supports WordPress Multisite @Coen Jacobs – that was my point when I wrote about it at wpmututorials. In multisite, there’s only one set of files (except for user uploads) so if you;re loking at vaultpress for the security aspect, just get it on the main site and do regualr backups for the rest. » Posted By Andrea_R On November 17, 2011 @ 9:19 AM A Theme With 70 Different Widget Spots The areas with vertically stacked section is especially ridiculous. Just put *more widgets* in the one widget area. DUH. If this was to get around users not knowing you can put more than one widget in a widget area, then the theme shop that did this is failing to provide some basic education. » Posted By Andrea_R On October 25, 2011 @ 2:44 PM WordCamp Montreal August 28th-29th I know we’re looking forward to it. :) » Posted By Andrea_R On August 19, 2010 @ 6:13 PM New WordPress Resource – Patches Welcome there’s definitely a *need* for that, so if you got to it first, that’d be awesome. » Posted By Andrea_R On July 26, 2010 @ 8:22 AM FeedBurner Relevancy And RSS Subscriber Numbers I’d like to have a rough idea. It doesn’t have to be accurate, but “close enough” woudl be good enough. I don’t need to know how they fluctuate on a daily basis. Mine has gone from in the 400s to over 6000. In the past week. » Posted By Andrea_R On June 30, 2010 @ 1:45 PM What To Do Or Consider After You Enable Multisite In WordPress Using multi-site how do i upgrade all of my plugins on a network wide basis without logging into all my sub-domains. When you upgrade one plugin, you;re upgrading the ONE file used by all the sites in the network.
When you say that you have to create a mu-plugins folder/directory in wp-content, does this then mean transferring all my existing plugins into this folder and deleting original plugins folder? No, this is an *extra* folder for plugin that run continuously. If a plugin is meant to go here, the instructions for that plugin will say so. Extra reading: I have a normal wp install which i have upgraded to multi site. Do plugins have to be MU specific to upgrade network wide? No. like I said above, if you install a plugin, it is now accessible to all sites in your network. One copy. » Posted By Andrea_R On June 27, 2010 @ 1:32 PM WPWeekly Episode 102 – Lisas New Project Bummed I missed it! :) » Posted By Andrea_R On June 20, 2010 @ 9:08 AM Look in the upper right when it shows the Kitteh blog. » Posted By Andrea_R On June 19, 2010 @ 7:32 PM WPWeekly Episode 98 – WordPress 3.0 And WordCamp San Francisco @JLeuze – YES! Awesome idea. :) Jeff, you really need to look into getting sponsors for sending you on trips to cover WordCamps. I mean, if a mommyblogger can get a consumer product company to send her to BlogHer, surely you can get someone to send you to a WordCamp. Wear their tshirt, do a lot fo recordings & interviews & mention them – and we’re all happy. » Posted By Andrea_r On May 4, 2010 @ 3:56 PM Would You Take WordPress Advice From A Non WordPress Using Site? This is where “eat your own dogfood” comes into play. :) » Posted By Andrea_r On April 28, 2010 @ 5:03 PM Cuba And The Goal Of WordPress It’s push button publishing for the people, right? The focus is ultimately on the user experience and making it easy for anyone – ANY person, regardless of circumstance to have a voice. That’s why I love it. As long as everyone keeps the end user in mind, and all the possibilities, then the sky really is the limit. No other goals need defining. » Posted By Andrea_r On April 2, 2010 @ 4:42 PM Classic And Kubrick Have Left The Building I say we all bow our heads for a moment of silence. That might explain a few things. :) - there’s something about attending a WordCamp that really helps the community. It’s too easy to be nasty to one another online, but it’s a lot harder standing there face to face. - see you in Chicago! » Posted By Andrea_R On January 26, 2010 @ 3:30 PM Multi-Site Is Just A Feature Set @Lars Tong Strömberg – check out the latest trunk of WP to see an initial pass. » Posted By Andrea_R On January 20, 2010 @ 2:42 PM WPWeekly Episode 84 – Interview With Page.ly @Nicolas – In the current trunk version of BuddyPress, it runs off a single WordPress install. you will only needs the multi-blog part if you want users to have actual blogs. The BP areas are tied to the main blog. » Posted By Andrea_R On January 17, 2010 @ 11:54 AM #1 -with an official code of conduct in place though, it will help people feel as they they *shouldn’t* tolerate nasty behavior. Right now, everyone puts up with it. If I start being “a mom” to jerks in the forum, reminding them to play nice, if there’s an official stance to point people to, it’s a whole lot better. #2 – this is directly related to #1. It’s not like there aren’t women out there programming in php, because they are. It’s just they aren’t contributing back to the core of WP. That was Jane’s point. Let’s make it easier for everyone to feel welcome, how about that? As to the money part, few people realize how making a name for yourself in the community can lead you to an income. no, it’s not direct. But the benefits are there. @Donnacha – LOL, nice catch. :D » Posted By Andrea_R On January 10, 2010 @ 6:49 PM WPWeekly Episode 83 – The WordPressMU Gurus Thank you so much for having us on, we had a great time. Tip: many people don’t realize how much of the regular WP articles are exactly the same in MU. » Posted By Andrea_R On December 2, 2009 @ 7:00 PM As I said on twitter, documentation. :) That includes wp.org & the codex, and yes I have been working on it here and there already. You know, a LOT of people are unaware that as long as they have a user login, they too can update the codex. Someone will look it over. there’s no need to worry too much about “doing it wrong”. :) If you see something that needs fixing, log in and fix it. Add new info. Join the wp-docs list.
