Breaking news
WordPress and WPMU will be MERGING.
This straight outta wordcamp SF.
When? I dunno yet. My guess is for 3.0.
-
Wow! Does this mean that 3.0 will be when WordPress officially crosses the line into being a full on CMS?

I dunno for sure, but it seems like it.
-
Wow. I'm not surprised by this news though. I think the writing was on the wall. MovableType already contains multi blog support in their platform and considering the technical aspect of MU, it will be great to see the two merge.
-
Yep.
It shares 90% of the codebase, more people want multiple blogs and.... it's the "easiest" way to get BuddyPress on "regular" wordpress.
-
I mean if you were looking at how BuddyPress, WordPress and WMPU were shaping up, you could see WPMU already starting to align itself with WordPress and BuddyPress was aligning itself with WPMU. So I think the natural thing to do is merge the codebases.
Originally, I thought each project was moving in such a way to make it as easy as possible to integrate one into the other by having similar/updated code bases but I guess now it's going to be all in one.
-
Yeah, I just hope the end result is that WPMU is easier, not WordPress getting harder. I can just see the support forums lighting up...

lol Yeah. I'm with Carlhancock in that BuddyPress should remain an independent project instead of being merged in.
Man, I wonder how easy it will be for existing WordPress MU users to migrate or upgrade to a merged WordPress/WPMU
-
Brilliant! So 3.0 should be in about six months time I guess. Hopefully that is the release they merge the two of them for.
-
I also wonder if after the Merge, the WPMU name will be retired and it will simply be WordPress?
