    Default Just to clarify...

There's been a lot of screaming regarding this: but let me just point out, as someone who talked with Matt and the folks at Automattic regarding the change:

WordPress is not going away. Neither is WPMU. WordPress.org is simply getting the WordPress MU features: multiple blogs, etc. This will most definitely come along with some simplification of things, but I think it's a great move.

As said before in this thread, MovableType supports multiple blogs already, so this will be WordPress catching up, and allowing not only WordPress.org to be a stronger system, but to make the already confusing and annoying disconnect between WP and MU go away.

    Why have people been screaming?

I can't see how this could be considered a bad thing.

Lorelle seems to have some different thoughts on this:

It's possible we've been misinformed, but I guess we need to wait on Matt to clarify things.

That is very disappointing if it is indeed the case. I really like the idea of the two pieces of software merging.

I think Dave Moyer was actually at the conference so I'm assuming he'd know for sure and from his post it looks like it is indeed a software merger. Hopefully he (and everyone else Ive seen posting about this) are correct.

Well this sums it up, from Jane Wells:
To anyone from the 3 am discussion: what Matt said in his keynote is that WP and MU would be merged, so that multiple blogs would be an option right in WordPress. No timeline given. Separately, later in the talk, he did a preview of new wordpress.org profiles, which will be the first step in bringing BuddyPress to the project as a communication tool. If Lorelle or anyone is reporting that he announced/meant MU was coming to wordpress.org the site, that's not correct. There will be a post (or series of them, depending on how long they turn out to be) on the dev blog within the week, summarizing everything Matt said.

So, based on my interview with Matt at WordCamp Chicago, the MU features won't be obvious during an install of WordPress. Rather, they will be switches in the wpconfig file that will need to be turned on before MU is enabled. However, 3.0 is awhile away so any number of things or implementations could happen between now and then. But judging by the reaction to the news, many people are welcoming this change.

Yep, we've been watching trac on WPMU and seeing what's going in there, and in 2.8, we noticed soem nifty things sneak in. you'd never know it if you weren't familiar with MU. :D

I would like to see WP, WPMU and BBPress merged. It would be a great all round package imo. Once BBPress has matured a bit more I think it will be built into WP.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure they'd want things being rolled into the core software which most people are unlikely to use. Forums and BuddyPress are two things which most WordPress users are unlikely to use/want.
