I thought the point of WP 3.0 was to eradicate the need to use the domain mapping and/or rewrites and/or virtual hosts?
No, the point was to merge in MU pretty much as is. ;) All the virtual stuff still needs doing, as that's fundamentally how it works.

I know you already did it, but here's some instructions I wrote:
    http://wpwebhost.com/using-multiple-...-wordpress-mu/

It's exactly the same process in 3.0 as it was (and still is) in MU.

    Hi Andrea :-)

Ahhh wow, cool. Glad I didn't have a rant based on my understanding of what WP 3.0 was :-) Makes complete sense!

To be honest, I've had it super easy with the install - because I'm using subdomains for everything as it's a local, offline when travelling install ... so didn't even need the plugin, hehe :)

Thanks so much for the reply - yep, I remember the MU setup, and how, when you understood all 6/7 steps, it was super easy - but without them all, you were screwed! :-)

Thanks for the instructions - duly bookmarked!

    Take it easy :-)

It was mainly the subfolder/subdomain thing that confused me. It seemed pointless, but I get it now that I understand how domain mapping is not included in the core. It seems like domain mapping shouldn't be a plugin, the core should just support arbitrary directory/subdomain/other-domain mapping by default. When I make a new site I should be able to just give the URL for it regardless, and have WP figure it out. Of course, mapping the DNS to it would be my own problem.

Actually, that was one of the things me and Matt talked about last week. I think he agrees with me that that needs to be moved to core. Maybe in 3.1 or 3.2.

Yeah, it was decided the merge part was enough for this go around. I'm pretty sure it will come up before 3.5.
