Key is just a string, any string should work.

However, default is to store the transient as an option, which has a 64 char limit on option name. Transient adds up to 19 characters to this, making max transient key word length = 45 chars.

All the internal cache stuff uses md5 of the URL to make it sure to fit within that amount.
