Hi spamboy, I'm in the very same situation, having to build my wordpress on my desktop (win 7 x64) pc and on my macbook (OS X 10.6.2) laptop as well. And wanting to have my source files and my data base files in the same folders on the stick for both xampp and mamp.

Have you found any solution? If yes, please let me know it, as detailed as your time allows you, I'm not too technical, I'm a graphic designer.

    Thank you!

As to the database, is there a reason you couldn't put the db on an external web server? If I remember correctly, you can enable remote MySQL connections from any site running cPanel.

Then just point your WordPress installation at that Database. Of course then you don't have the database stored locally, but the only time I can think of that that would be an issue is if you're trying to develop without an internet connection (which isn't necessarily an unreasonable use case).
