    Default Permalinks in 2010 Theme

Have an existing site http://www.greenhatworkshop.com and have used default permalinks.
Now want to change to pretty permalinks and cannot get it to work.
Have tried changing .htaccess code an have not been succesful
Have gone to Permalinks, custom and used %postname%, however then when i type in http://www.greenhatworkshop.com/contact the page cannot be found
Have tried Deans Permalink plugin and Custom Permalinks plugin with no luck also.
I am not hugely technical, but can follow instructions well, so please help if you cannot but keep it easy to follow :)

Have you CHMOD'ed your .htaccess file to 666? If not, you can do this via FTP, generally by right-clicking on the file and going to permissions. WordPress and most plugins automatically write to that file, so if WordPress can't, you either have to do a manual modification or change permissions on the file.

If neither work, I would contact your web hosting provider as it would seem something is wrong on their end.

Any updates on this? Are you still having permalink problems?
