For membership/subscription based websites the only one I have ever used (or needed to use) is aMember. You can integrate it with WordPress (for newbies admittedly it has a bit of a learning curve). The support is second to none, and you can set up multiple subscription types and configure some pretty complex scenarios. It is not free though.

If you just want a pretty basic membership site then the available WordPress Plugins could deliver what you need. If it is for a business site you may want something with a bit more robust (aMember has been around for years and is a mature product)!
