    Default Visit my site and it tries to download a GZ file

    Help?

    I have no idea what happened here, but if you go to my site on Firefox it's fine. When you go on IE or Chrome, it tries to download either download.gz (Chrome) or ipstenu.gz (IE).

    Individual posts are fine.

    Updated: There is NOTHING in the error log, I've tried with and without WP Super Cache. Compression is turned off, and the index page isn't even cached at this point. Bounced Apache and nothing. It's insanely not understandable. One friend is fine 100% (she can see it on every browser) another couldn't see it on Chrome or IE, but now, magically, IE is fine.

    Okay. Seriously what in gay hell just happened?

    The site is running now.

    About a minute after I posted, I switched my theme back to 2010 and deleted every single file related to WP Super Cache, went and got the latest SVN of 3.0-beta and uploaded that.

    Then about 10 min ago, a friend tweets that he's getting cached messages in page sources, AN HOUR after I've not only turned off but uninstalled WP Super Cache. More so, he's getting GZIP mentions, which were turned off almost 2 hours back as the first debug attempt.

    I go "OMGWTFBBQ!?" and he adds 'I just flushed my Chrome Cache, and it seems to come up now.'

    On top of that, while this was going on, someone else said 'The site's CSS is missing.' She refreshed, it came back, she posted a comment, it vanished.

    At this point, I'm thinking my server had a hissy fit, except the other three (no, four) sites on the box are not only fine, but running faster than ever.

    Now that it's working, I wanna figure out what the hell happened. Any ideas?

    Works fine for me. Glad to see it sorted itself out. I hate it when something works one minute and doesn't the next.

    According to Donncha, this happens from time to time, and he's never been able to figure it out. He said turning off compression (which I had done) solves it and half-mode normally does.

    The fact that HE can't solve it makes my mind boggle.

    Next time it starts try http://redbot.org/ it is good at pointing out obscure header issues, which seems often to be trouble for encoding.

    I vaguely remember that WP Super Cache gave me grief with compression when I tried it and I went with Hyper Cache because of that back then (recently mowed to W3 total cache).

    I've been using WP Super Cache for a year now (ever since my site got nailed by the Digg effect and nearly died). I tried W3 total cache, but it just weird weird with WP 2.9 and the only fix was to uninstall.

    Since everything's okay today, I'm going to re-install and turn it on sans compression. We'll see how THAT goes.

    I've bookmarked redbot for later :)

    Give W3 Total Cache a try again. I had a similar experience - tried to install it, and things went wonky (and front-end white-screened). Then, tried a newer version again a couple months later, and everything has worked swimmingly.

    I'm also hearing good things about WP Hyper Cache, though I've never tried it.

    What's so good about WP Total vs WP Super? or really, what's so different... I know it says it's better and does more, but ... what's more?

    I read this: http://www.nerdgrind.com/w3-total-ca...p-super-cache/ but I wonder if someone had a more recent review?

    @Ipstenu

    My personal experience:
    - Super Cache - bit confusing, compression troubles, didn't go with it;
    - Hyper Cache - turn on and it just works, not much features on top, used it for months;
    - W3 Total Cache - a lot of settings and buttons to press, killer functionality, some hiccups here and there that are getting fixed from version to version.

    Really where W3 cache shines is concatenating, minifying and compressing styles and scripts. I recently did light (relatively) performance tuneup at Freeware Genius and I just basically fed W3 lots of CSS and JS and it produced single file for each automagically. No manual work at all. You can edit original files separately and it will get updated on output.

    For people who can tweak their servers W3 supports several memory caching options. And several kinds of CDN for content.

    For simple tasks W3 is neither considerably better or worse than Super or Hyper cache.

    But if you need to deal with a mess or loads of traffic - functionality is superior over both.
