Choosing a theme to manipulate

Hi all,

I am stuck, (as I knew I would be). I have never used wordpress as a CMS for a website before.
This is the Layout of the front page I am trying to create.
and the Sub pages

I have downloaded a few templates to try and manipulate and have ended up in a mess

Would someone be able to recommend a template or the best starting point for me to achieve my end result?

All help appreciated!
Comments about my flagrant destruction of wp is also understandable.
