    Indeed.

    And I'll re-iterate what I said previously:

But, I'm apparently in the minority on this one (and seen by some as "whining" for asking how Guideline #4 doesn't also apply to HTML comments), and I see no benefit from furthering this line of questioning. So I won't.

I'm dropping this, beyond helping Edwin getting his question answered.

And the inline comments add 7 lines - FIVE of which are used for debugging and arguably necessary for making sure it's working, and delivering info I need as a site owner.

Mark just told you: it wasn't the intention of the rule to prevent that.

Yes I'm afraid our community is getting so big this stuff needs to be regulated. But, please, keep in mind that w3edge, myself and a lot of other people do NOT make money from our plugins. Give us our HTML comments, and enjoy our plugins, or, if you don't like these comments choose from the following: edit them out, or don't use our plugins.
Further to what yoast said, NO ONE is making anyone use his plugin. No one HAS to use any of the plugins in the repo.

Nearly every plugin in the repo was written by someone who did it in their free time. A good way to kiil any volunteer organization is to start knitpicking every little detail.

Logic will prevail. WordPress.org isn't going to prevent people from injecting source-code advertising for the plugin being used. Particularly since such advertising is often useful (ie: you can look at someone else's site and figure out what plugin they used).

There was a plugin I stopped using because it was injecting too much junk into my HTML. It created a big logo and large sized text within the markup. I didn't think it should be removed from the repository though, I just didn't like it because it ballooned my code by an extra 3 kB's or so. I can't remember the name of the plugin; I think it was a lightbox plugin IIRC.

I thought it was a security thing not to disclose what stuff is used on a website.
People recommend removing powered by WordPress and wordpress metas etc. Can't this also fall into that category?
So themes/plugins should come with a option to remove credit stuff regardless of where it is printed on the frontend?

    [Edit]
I thought I posted "but url!=link" in my earlier comment. Strange that its not there now must have forgotten to press save.

    Hi Guys,

Yes, with the location reference mentioned by Chip I was able to remove the part in the comment that I didn't want to have included.

The main reason for me asking this was to remove the "Served from" reference because it showed a different domain, the main domain of my VPS account.

I was looking into the things that could tie my domains together and this one aspect caught my attention.

I didn't want to have a visible finger print that could tie one domain with another that I manage.

Should someone find a niche I'm working on interesting and think what else is this person working on, doing some investigative work could produce every single site I work on.

Perhaps it was unnecessary to begin with after having now changed nameservers and IP's (And learning more on the subject), but before I took those steps that was also something that caught my attention and thought there must be an easy and quick way to get rid of that "Served from" reference.

So that was basically the motive behind my question.

Never thought a debate like this would ensue. :)

    Thanks for clarifying.

You should be aware that unless you host your domains on unique IP addresses it's still possible to find the other domains that are hosted on it. Furthermore there are services that will give an exhaustive list of the domains that "appear" to be owned by you, unless you use the "privacy protection" your domain registrar offers.

    Thanks for using W3TC.

    No problem. :)

Yes, I do use separate IP's and nameservers, and also domain privacy.
