Nightlies are not 'official betas' though. They made a change on SVN with post_image/post_thumbnail but they haven't pushed out a new Beta or RC since then yet.
Nightlies are bleeding edge alphas, yes.

Anthony Cole said he'd had the same problem with RC2.
I was actually trying to update to Beta 2 with the beta update plugin, but for some reason it keeps updating me to the latest darn nightly.

Something else is broken in RC2 now as well. The add_theme_support() function does not seem to exist anymore :(

Oh that's weird. The RC is out, yet I got upgraded to beta 2 ... go figure. Off to manually download RC1 now.

Well that's bizarre. I think the beta upgrade plugin downgraded me to an older version which said it was beta 2, but was in fact not ... very strange.

It's now been released as the official version. Hopefully my site doesn't break again on this release :p

On the topic of 2.9 bugs, WPTavern was hit with the issue of posts missing their schedule. I can't publish anything from XML-RPC now until 2.9.1 is released because the post will for some reason be scheduled and then miss that schedule. I know they've released a patch for the bug but I'll just wait for 2.9.1
