Press75 also sells Premium GPL theme downloads. WPCult is offering a premium Hybrid child theme called Cultivate. In addition, Elevate Themes and Jestro Themes offer free GPL theme downloads with paid support memberships.

I would claim that Press75 themes are NOT GPL themes, and the Press75 theme licensing is not 100% in line with the GPL.

The Press75 Theme Licensing & Use states “Theme CSS (style.css) and Design (included image files) are all Copyright 2009 Circa75 Media, LLC. All other theme files (*.php files) containing WordPress code are licensed under the GNU general public license (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html).” And the license wording in the Press75 theme files - “The CSS, XHTML and design are all Copyright 2009 Circa75 Media, LLC:”

    Check it here: http://www.press75.com/terms-conditions/

This is quite different to the 100% GPL themes from developers such as StudioPress with a theme license that states “The CSS, XHTML and design is released under GPL:”

Jason Schuller who operates Press75.com was in attendance at WordCamp Chicago and was one of three to have a sit down conversation with Matt about the GPL and specifically, this page that Matt is putting together. So, let's give it some time to see if the license changes or if Jason will go about things his own way. I was not privvy to what exactly was discussed between the four.

To everyone else, whether Jason is in line with the GPL or not is not up for debate so please don't bother :)

That they were. By the way, it was nice to meet you, Brad and the others up there. Thanks for letting me sit at the same table too. :)

Press75's approach is legal, but we want to promote 100% GPL solutions.

    Hmm, I resemble that admonition... ;) But don't worry; I won't go there. :)

So I take it that Themes that have GPL'd PHP and JavaScript code, yet images, HTML and CSS that were released to the Public Domain wouldn't count? (Sorry, I meant to ask this at WC-Chicago, but it looks like the IM question that I passed on to you from Mike took up too much of your time.)

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
