The new IRC channel is way more usable than the regular Tavern chatbox.

Is there any chance you could ditch the current chatbox and replace it with the IRC channel?

It's a lot nicer to chat via a proper client rather than via the web, and it's a lot more usable as we can ping each other, get audio notifications etc. etc. which aren't possible with the one hosted on the forum, plus we don't need to have a browser window open to use it.

I thought of this as every single time I turn my computer on, the WP Tavern IRC client boots up and I can automatically see that Utkarsh and hallsofmonetezuma are online (don't think I've seen anyone else on there outside of WP Weekly hours). Then when I needed to talk to utkarsh earlier tonight, I just pinged him via the IRC chat room and he replied about 30 seconds later. We don't have that ability via the current forum chat box.

Since the IRC chatbox works on the site during WP weekly, I'm assuming it could be left on 24/7 and injected into the forum where the current day-to-day chatbox is instead.

Just an idea :)

I just thought of a problem ... there probably isn't an easy to way to have the forum auto log you in to the IRC chat.

It is possible to embed the IRC chat into the forum but it is not possible to hook the forum users into IRC. They require separate accounts. I suppose I could just disable the chatbox and supplement it with the IRC chat. This will give me a reason to have my IRC client always on again.
