    Default PixoPoint WordPress Unzipper

I submitted the following as a blog post for here on WP Tavern. However it seems there is a better product in development anyway so there isn't much point in writing a blog post about this when something better will be along shortly anyway. Since I created it I figured I'd post it here for you guys to try out if you have a use for it though. It could definitely be made better, but it sounds like someone else is onto that already anyway.

There's more information about it on my blog too:

    ----------------
A tweet by Jeff Chandler mentioned how the "WordPress five minute installation". However I've often found it takes me a lot longer than five minutes due to thelaborious task of uploading stacks of files via FTP. My broadband connection is capped at 128 kB/s upload which can make uploading all of the WordPress files quite a time consuming task.

To speed the upload process up I wrote a very simple script which allows me to upload the raw wordpress.zip file as downloaded from <a href="http://wordpress.org/">WordPress.org</a> and when I run my script it automatically unzips it. The raw zip file is significantly faster to upload than all of the files on their own. In case the tools is of any use to the wider WordPress community, I've made it look a little prettier and have posted it for download.
There may be other tools around which are better. If you know of any I'd love to hear about them. There are lots of improvements that could be done to my simple script. Like WordPress, it is licensed under the GPL so feel free to modify it and post your improvements for download.

click on the filename, then on the right choose "extract file". :D

If it's not there (sometimes it won't show) pick "show file, and when the new window/tab loads, change in the URL the word from "show" to "extract".

    works like a charm.

Well then there's another question. How do click on a file in cPanel? I'm guessing there is some sort of file manager? Actually, no need to answer that, I'm sure I could figure it out if I had a poke around.

I'll still use my unzipping tool though to save having to go into cPanel just to extract a file.

I use it to manage databases, FTP accounts, email addresses, sub-domains and to look up stats and I've started using the backup wizard.

There's a bunch of other junk in there but it all looks like wasted space to me.

Is this something that could be built into a WordPress installer script, and made part of the core download?

My one? Perhaps, but I think there are much better ways of doing it. My method is extremely crude and WordPress.org could do much better.

The more complicated one which I've seen screenshots of would not work on some server setups, so the .zip file would still be required.

SMF offers both a web installer and the regular download file. I think that would be a good option for WordPress.org. Most people could use the web installer, the rest could do it the old fashioned way.

There's an option called "file manager" (well actually two options, the other one is "legacy file manager") which handles files and folders. the legacy can not compress folders though.
