Icon3 Six Different Ways To Create Post Types

Thanks to Kevin Leary and this post:

    http://www.kevinleary.net/6-ways-to-...-in-wordpress/

I think I finally understand what the big fuss is all about regarding custom post types. A few lightbulbs went off in my head after reading the post as I began to understand why someone would want a custom post type. Seems like a very cool idea and now, I don't mind having an easy way of doing this in the core of WordPress which has been in the developer chat in the past.

Ticket #9674 Better support for custom post types got blessed yesterday after some months of silence, which is great. http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/9674

Focused work was up for 3.0 but maybe something useful may come in 2.9 ?

    Icon14 Thanks!

    Thanks Jeff,

A few months back I started listening to the podcast, good stuff man keep up the great work.

I've found the #1 reason I use custom write panels is to make the WordPress admin interface as idiot proof as possible for clients.

Sometimes I'll split a page into multiple form fields instead of using one WYSIWYG, allowing writers to manage only what they need. These plugins let me label those fields clearly, making it easier for writers to use. This means less training and frustration for everyone.

Restrictions like this give me significantly more control over the design while also making it less likely to break in the future.

    Thanks again for the shoutout!

Thanks for signing up to the forum Kevin and for listening to the show. Your scenario definitely makes sense to me as a good reason to have custom post types. I'm trying to think of how I could use these post types for myself.

Custom post types would be a post type thats not a Page or a post, like a toot content/post type: http://www.wp-fun.co.uk/2008/10/09/d...-my-toot-toot/

A custom write panel, could be a post or Page content type, but with a custom UI, while plugins like Custom Fields Template just puts some UI on custom fields with some filters.

Are there any good articles anywhere dealing with terminology for content types, post types, write panels etc ? I think its important to have the terminology in place to have good discussions on where WP may move when it comes to custom content types ( CCT ) and backend UI.

I`m just started digging into CCT, so forgive me if I got the terminology wrong ;)

Jeff, here are some real world screenshots of the More Fields plugin in action. I used it to add a few fields outside out of the post area on a portfolio entry page.

I've used pretty much all of these but try my best to stay away from using a plugin unless really required.

For a long time Flutter seemed to be the best but its faltered.

In fact, I blogged about this back in April:
