SMF offers both a web installer and the regular download file. I think that would be a good option for WordPress.org. Most people could use the web installer, the rest could do it the old fashioned way.
Hmm... well, is there some script/app somewhere that could be attached to a Trac ticket recommending the functionality? (I always *hate* overwriting via FTP, for just this reason. My DSL doesn't like FTP transfer of hundreds of small files...)

I'm not sure this is something for Trac actually. AFAIK Trac is for changes to the software itself. This sort of system wouldn't change the software at all, it would just upload/install it all for you automatically.

I'd guess it's something to be suggested to the WordPress.org folks. Perhaps you could try suggesting it via the IRC chat, WP Hackers Mailing list or by emailing WordPress.org.

It may pay to hold off for a few weeks, as by the sounds of it the software will be ready by then and people will be able to try it out and test it.

I just think it is as easy to extract the zip in ftp then use your 'thing'

IMO this would just be adding bloat to the Wordpress core.

I completely disagree. For the vast majority of users, such functionality would make the install so much easier, and would make it appear so much more polished.

(For a lot of people, just using FTP to upload the unzipped files is more than enough to handle. Throw out a term like "cPanel", and you're going to start making eyes cross.)

How would it be bloat? How big could such a script possibly be?

It couldn't really go into the core since it can't be part of the core download anyway, it would need to be a separate application from WP, unless there is something I'm missing here.

Like I mentioned before, my system is too basic to be promoted by WP.org. But there are much better ways of doing things and they wouldn't add bloat to anything since they'd be a separate application.

It's not a plugin. Even if it was a plugin it wouldn't stand a chance of winning.

    I've entered a separate plugin already ... http://weblogtoolscollection.com/plu...ixopoint-menu/

FYI, here's a separate thread about the "other" software I mentioned ... WordPress Single-file Automatic Installer
