    Icon5 WordPress and Site5 RUP

    Ain't I pain to people...

While looking for a hosting change last week I checked out Site5 among others. Ads on WP blogs, they release free WP themes (I think some even made to SmashingMagazine), etc.

I found their resource usage policy at http://www.site5.com/support/rup/ and as for me it looks unsuitable for WP in following parts:
    • [processes can't] Consume more than 16 MB of RAM.
    • Number of open files should not exceed 64.
    • Web processes should not fork or spawn subprocesses.

WordPress is memory hog for sure. 32MB limit is default and I had to increase it at my blog or things like archives and updates were running out.

I am not sure about open files definition here, is loading WP engine (multiply files) fits this or not?

WP spawns wp-cron, which I think fits definition of extra spawned process that doesn't interact with user.

I've inquired about this at Site5 twitter account. Over following back and forth I've been told (intensely :) that Site5 works with WP perfectly, hosts large quantity of WP blogs and WP clearly fits their RUP.

I don't doubt they do host WP blogs. I do doubt it fits in that RUP.

    Opinions?

16 MB RAM limit seems weird.

CPU usage seems to the usual way to cap shared hosting setups.

It's always amusing to see people ranting about how they got an extra terrabyte of data transfer by changing hosts, when they'll max out every other limit on their hosting account long before they ever reach their first terrabyte of data transfer, let alone the extra one they got by moving hosts.

    For CPU usage they say:
[process can't] Utilize in excess of 15 seconds of CPU time.
WordPress is unlikely to go over this, but strange metric. My previous and current hosts measured CPU consumption in percent.

Yeah, sure funny with quotas. :) My new host has them ~4 times lower and yet I am just as unlikely to reach limit. I was using under 2% of bandwidth at previous host, but almost maximum of CPU allowance.

I got kicked off Site5 3-4 years ago. :D They have since changed hands.

And yes, it was a WPMU site and we'd got up to about 300 busy blogs by then.

Ha! Yeah, I know. I can laugh about it now, but they basically did it with no warning on the very day movers showed up to move my entire house.

So, it's like they read my blog & picked the worst possible day. :P
