Default use WP.me URL shortener without stats plugin?

I'm putting together a simple plugin to add various social media sharing links, with my main goal to make it a bare-bones setup (just HTML and CSS, no javascript, etc). I've been digging around, and I can't seem to find a definitive answer as to whether or not I can use the wp.me shortener on it's own. I'm currently using the default url /p?postID setup, but using the wp.me would be preferred. Any ideas?

The operation of the wp.me shortlinks is tied into the linking of the blog to WordPress.com with the stats plugin.

    So, short answer, no.

Figured as much, based on what I read. I'll keep using the default ?p= method for now. Going for a "less is more" approach, so I'm avoiding any scripts or 3rd party shorteners. Might implement the upcoming twitter shortener once it is released.

A true URL shortener is, by definition, a third-party service (unless one happens to own a proper short URL domain, for use with YORULS or similar).

this is true. but I figured the wp.me one was as 'local' as it could get. I'd use bit.ly (since everyone knows what it is) but then I'd have to make a settings panel for the API key, etc. I want this particular plugin to be the anti-AddToAny or SexyBookmarks
