    Default E-commerce Options

    Hey gang,

It's been a year or so since the Shopp vs WP E-Commerce vs Other thread has been around, so I thought I'd toss it back out there.

I'm working with a client now who's considering a move to WP and wants an online store so that they can sell physical goods and ship them out w/ UPS (They have an account they'd like to keep using).

I've mentioned the "big" two options, and the only two that I can think of that are GPL-licensed. Am I missing any?

Has anyone tried either? Both? I'm sorta leaning towards Shopp right now, but would love recommendations before suggesting one over the other.

    Thanks!

wp-e-commerce has plugins which are not GPL. It is often forgotten because Milward is friendlier than Pearson. So if you want to go with pure 100% GPL all the way then its Shopp you should choose.

And for the rest there is QuickShop, eShop and more: http://designm.ag/resources/wordpress-e-commerce/

The Market theme is another overlooked one. Probably because it's not blatantly obvious you can use it without the theme. Simple, straightforward, and it actually works in MU.

    Incorrect.

All of the WP e-Commerce modules are now GPL and have been quite a while now. I asked Dan about this a while ago and he said they just hadn't gotten around to updating their site to say so.

Until it says on the homepage that they are GPL I won't treat them as GPL. The license for each premium upgrade clearly goes against the wp community interpretation of the GPL. When they change it to become GPL on the site I will call them GPL until then they are not GPL. Twitter conversations doesn't change licenses.

No, but the license in the software itself does.

I'll send a link to this topic to Dan to remind him to update his site.

    Default Gpl

    Kia Ora. Hey guys :)

    1) Opps I forgot that to be GPL you have to say you're GPL

    2) Milward (I) don't even know who Pearson is. At least I don't think so... but thanks for saying that. I think...

    3) WP e-Commerce Plugin is the most extensible
    http://getshopped.org/extend/community-plugins/

    4) I havent publicly said it before but in my opinion if a plugin is purely $$$$ then its token GPL.... maybe not legally speaking. But at least in my heart.

    5) WP e-Commerce Plugin now lives at getshopped.org which is a wonderful new site with more videos and documentation then previously.

    6) WP e-Commerce Plugin is used on wordcamp.org and the ticket module creates badges for wordcamps as well as integrates with gravatars (hoorah!)

    7) WP e-Commerce Plugin 3.8 is going to be launched soon. It uses WP taxonomy for product categories and variation sets. AND variations are child products. So lots less database tables & it reflects what goes down in a retail outlet

    8) We now have UPS + USPS + Fedex support

I think I'm missing something but can't be sure. Its a lovely Sunday here in NZ and I just finished an hour of Yoga!!! I feel great and now its coffee time :D

And we're already working on the next one.
I'm guessing if its good enough to be published globally... its probably pretty good then ;)

Of course you have to. If you don't say you are GPL then you aint.
Currently potential buyers have no clue that what they are buying is GPL

This ain't exactly inline with the GPL.

    • Non proffit organisations may use the Single Blogger License.
    • The Business License is for any organisation that has more than one staff member and individuals building e-commerce sites for clients that have more than one staff member - currently this is the only difference.

This is exactly what has me leaning towards Shopp to begin with. I -LOVE- that WP e-Commerce is using the freemium model and offers the plugin for free, while offering addons to extend it that costs money. But the "grey"-ness of it's GPL license is what gave me the second thoughts. Shopp, from what I can tell, is GPL from end to end.

I didn't know you could use it without the theme... and we're building the site on Genesis. I'll take a peek at this one. Thanks, Andrea.

This is part of what makes me nervous. Though, admittedly, Shopp has both a "single" and a "developer" price, too.
