Understanding that Jeffro needed to make some changes, it's been sad to see the traffic slow at WPT. Any other cool WP hangouts? I've been Googling about but haven't anything similar to the voice WPT and its community had in its heyday.

None that I'm aware of.
I'm working on getting back into the swing of things. There are more changes coming but I haven't given up just yet. The most active community WordPress place I've seen so far is WPCandy. Seems to be the happening place these days.
WPCandy is just news. Theres really no alternative to the WPT forum and I think this forum could grow more. Maybe a post or two on WPCandy could help =).
There's some good activity on WPUA.org, both from developers and end-users.
Hmm, interesting site. It looks like they're intending to block access to non-paying users in the future though and have already blocked non-logged in users from accessing their forum. That sort of thing puts me right off any forum as it makes it impossible to post links to forum topics anywhere.
Yeah, the WordPress Users Association has all kinds of perks for purchased memberships. But if they are seeing that much activity, I'm guessing that they;ve had a number of people sign up. I mean, John P. is a pretty popular guy.
Plus it being free "FOR NOW!!!" got a lot of people to sign up. they also email every week, which I am starting to just delete upon sight.
I think calling WPCandy "just news" isn't quite accurate. It's primarily news, but a lot more is mixed in as well. A forum will almost immediately follow the first releases of bbPress.
Hopefully Jeff will keep the Tavern kicking. The forum here is a great resource and has lots of good people contributing. There is plenty of room for all the WordPress information providers right now, as most people can't get enough information.
I look forward to WPTavern moving forward, and seeing new communities pop up and thrive.
