    I've had issues running Ubuntu on my Inspiron 6000. That was a few years ago admittedly, but the problems were pretty infuriating, normally minor glitches they you don't realise until you REALLY BADLY need to use whatever thing doesn't have a driver working.

    I'm assuming it wasn't one of Dell's pre-configured-for-Linux ("Dell*buntu") offerings? Their laptops with Windows pre-installed most definitely are not going to be perfectly compatible with Linux. The Dell*buntu laptops use a few different hardware components that are known to be compatible with the Linux kernel in general, and Ubuntu in particular.
