Icon14 Joomla Community Site Is Cool

Came across this last night in a conversation with AmyStephen on Twitter which had more to do with Joomla launching a usergroup for their unofficial 1.6 user guide.

But I also checked out their community portal site http://community.joomla.org/ and thought it was pretty impressive. Easy access to the translation aspect of the project, access to different user groups, events, and even a link that clearly gives information on how to contribute to the project. They even have an area for team blogs where there is one community blog but there are posts from various team members giving people and inside look as to what is going on with various aspects of the project.

The more I browse around, the more refreshed I feel about the way they go about not only presenting great information to the public and their user base but how they have organized everything. I don't want to see WordPress do everything Joomla does but I sure hope they pick up on a few things regarding the way they have easily leveraged their community and provided easy access ways of getting involved and staying in the know. With WordPress, this type of stuff is too distributed. Hope the community portal revamp turns out well.

I agree. Joomla and other CMS's have much better community sites. I suspect WordPress is about to catch up fairly rapidly with the roll out of the BuddyPress features plus updates to the codex setup etc. which will hopefully be coming soon.

Amusing to see that their "Joomla Connect" page hauls in posts from WordPress powered sites :) ... http://community.joomla.org/connect.html

Heh, yeah! That is pretty weird. Might be an admission that WordPress is the tool for the job to just have a blog setup to publish content. I dunno.

I think their demo site has been hacked. I visited it and my browser immediately downloaded a random file without me prompting it and there appears to be a weird bit of code in the text on the page.

Any ideas where I would report it to?

Meh, followed their advice to go to their forum, tried the "Ask a tech" box at the top of the page and it spat out an error. Too lazy to register for their site so that I can post it in their forum so hopefully someone else finds it and reports it to them.

I didn't get any prompts or download any files.

Perhaps they fixed it. Or perhaps it has an auto-reset which gets rid of any previous changes.

Umbraco also have a pretty decent new community area:

The problem with getting good community sites lies in getting good community members to manage them. The best community sites are ones where there are a core group of people who can work full-time on them. This doesn't often happen in purely volunteer projects.

Heck, WordPress can't even get enough people interested in keeping the Codex up-to-date! That's no reflection on WordPress but it is a reflection on what happens when people are expected to work for nothing except the goodness of their hearts.
