    Default setting up

I wondered how you all set up WordPress with regards to adding news to a site.
In the past I used the posts to run the news on a site and then had a news category. Now there are custom post types do you use them for the news or continue using posts?

love to hear you views on what you do

I think that depends on your particular situation.

If you have a large site, which includes both a blog and a separate news section, the "news" custom post-type might make more sense, particularly if your blog already has a large number of categories of which "news" doesn't fit well. However, if you only have a news section, and not a blog section, then combining the two would make the most sense.

Also, remember that if you combine the two, that your RSS feed (by default at least) will include both your news and blog feeds.

i find the Custom Post types being used alot for specialist stuff (like real estate, car listings, slideshows etc) - makes life so much more easier.

    Recently 3 sites i did
    - used normal Categories for news/blog section
    - used Custom Post types for slideshows and car listings

That said, i suck at developing so end up buying themes that do this :)

Interesting you start this thread as Justin Tadlock recently wrote about his thoughts on rethinking how News Themes work - http://justintadlock.com/archives/20...ws-themes-work perhaps inspiration for this thread?

How does having a custom post type work with the RSS feed? Does it create a separate feed? Is it included in a general feed? Does it even have an RSS feed? If so, is that something you enable/disable?

No idea sorry. I assume they're there by default but I'm not 100% sure. I don't think I've worked on a custom post-type that required it's own feed.

On checking it looks like it does not create a feed but it does create a comments feed for the custom post type

Thanks for the link I will have a read of that but no i had not seen that before posting. I think of this question almost everytime i set up a site now so i wanted to post and see how you giys set up your sites now we have custom post types. I like CPT's because it makes it easy for the user to know where to go in the menu and they cannot cross post by accident.
